Lemmiwinks
well, from what I hear, the actives are a lot worse than the passives. Aparently you're better off with a pair of "normal" Tannoy reveal + a good amp. SMI²LE
Guest djcl.ear
I like very much the theoretical effect an eye-like shaped box will have on the quality of the music. Way much better than an square/rectangular speaker box. Meaning less parallels inside and thus less pressure points inside the box and a more fluent movement of the drivers Of course, the rest of the components are important also. Remmember generally your sound system is going to sound as better as the weaker link in the chain. Therefore the shape of the speaker is something to look at. I haven't searched/or heard them so if you still have this choice consider the answers to you other post(best amp, best spks) and if fits The tannoys might well be a very good choice... Also notice that it is clasified under the MONITOR class and not PA, which usually(it is still a mkting claim) means the importance is set on the sound quality, volume coming second. And lemmiwinks is right an active box(with an amp inside) depends on the amplifier quality that the factory placed inside. Usually is less trouble at the time of installing and also prevents that the amp gets the spk fried by either being to potent for the task... or to small and then the low volume BUT clipped(distorted) signal also fries the spks. If you choose the pasive box(without amp inside) the amplifier is your choice and hence the resulting quality and if you go this way, I will mostly recommend a choice of simmilar(a little above) the normal RMS rating(at the same impedance: OHmn measure, a beautiful word/sound: OHMMMS, get to know what it is for, its very useful too). keep us informed of your search
Guest djcl.ear
Also when considering active boxes, ask for it to include the possibility to connect the monitors without the amp inside, meaning two possible things; 1- that the monitors have a direct connector in the back bypassing the amp and going direct to the internal passive crossover(dont get mixed by the word passive again, here it has a complete different meaning; Passive box has no relation with Passive crossover). 2- Secondly it could mean that you have an extra double connector in their back that allows to connect tweeters and Midds inside the monitor to two different external amps for each driver. This is rare, since it will allow you to go triamplified later, much better sound but much complicated(biamp means an extra subwoofer + the amp(with a innnncorporated xover for it, whether triamp means the extra subwoofer + the amp, plus other amp for the tweeter using the first amp you bought for the Midds). ...complicated I guess alternative one is the one to ask for since allows you for later biamping.. Hope this helps
Guest djcl.ear
It should've said: "Also when considering active (AND PASSIVE) boxes". "I guess alternative two is the one to ask for since allows you for later biamping.." because this conexion bypasses the pasive xover allowing later independent conection of each speaker driver.
