How does one get that nice click which is layered over the kick. Is it a sample or does it just take some tweaking?

If you want a really clicky kick, use a large amount of pitch modulation with a fast decay. This means it starts out at a high frequency (where the click comes from) and quickly gets down to the bassy part of the kick, without the noticeable downward pitch bend of certain old goa kicks.

What you do to get a click is take a sample and chop it so there is a gap between the line and the zero db.

I also use Bazzism, well worth the price.

 

2KHz (chesty part) and 5KHz (click) are good general areas to boost a tiny bit (broad Q) to make the transient come through the mix a bit better and to give some extra sharpness to the kickdrum.

bazzism + use eq and a multiband compressor to get that click sounding louder. Really depends what kind of sound you want to achieve. Also layering, if you find a right sample with a click and cutoff all the lows from it and layer on top of your bass kick you should get nice effects too. For that you need to have a sample library on a disk to find matching one or carefully change pitch of your samples, and you have to make those two kicks not to interfere too much with each other.

Bazzism is good, i use sometimes emulation of 808 and 909 which is nice too, thats for more round kicks...

Some people put a hi hat hit on every beat to coincide with the kickdrum. I personally don't like the sound of this when the same hat sound is used elsewhere as well (ruins the groove for me), neither do I like it when all the high and low mids of the hat are still present (ruins the body of the kick for me).

Another idea to get a nice kick - you send the output of your kick synth to three tracks in your DAW and then EQ each so that one track only has low freq, the second only mids and the third only hi freqs. Then you can adjust the levels, EQ for each part separately, add a bit of distortion just to one of the tracks and other stuff. Then you just can sample it and use it.
