Lemmiwinks Posted September 2, 2012 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Hey there, Everytime I go to a big festival I always notice a group of people who stand out of the crowd (mostly from France, but not only). It's like they come there but don't really care about psytrance, they play some sort of hybrid acid core with some breakbeat influences, most of it is very raw and basic but you can have a lot of fun with it given the right circumstances. I never really knew how to get into the scene, nor what the hell was the scene called in the first place, until only very recently I was explained it is called "tekno" (willingly spelled differently than "techno" to show the difference), and that this sound basically only lives in squat parties and is a heritage from the Spiral Tribe movement. I've always tried to track down some cool tracks but never really seem to be able to find those that really did it for me at festivals. It is old, from 1991-1992 and, yes harder and rawer than the German-American techno it derived from. It influenced the 'Hardcore' scene in America and elsewhere and I think it is mostly dead today. Mostly released on low-buget vinyl, it is hard to find nowadays. well that's the thing, I used to dismiss it as some outdated hardcore as well but it seems that pretty much like psytrance this scene is in some sort of bubble where it just keeps developing among people who know it, even though most outsiders don't even know it exists. Not much in to the tekno scene but I would say they throw a party just as often as a psy trance party. They are always underground parties, usually free or a small donation in a squad place or outside. Sometimes they throw a dark psytrance party/tekno party and they have 2 styles going on. I noticed a lot of dark psy fans can also appreciate tekno music and the other way around. Don't know if this goes for every place though. And funny enough a lot of French people I meet at underground parties like this music. By the way I remember one time I was at this great psy party and it ended in the morning time. My friend in a van asked me if I wanted to go to a 'techno' party. Thinking it was the usual techno I hopped in and when I arrived there I was like 'wtf!, this is way different then techno', after this my friend explained the names. I'm gettin' into psytrance culture in these days after few years of tekno/tribe/acid italian scene, so here's my favourite tracks of this scene... I think there's a lot of issues in the italian tekno scene, causes must be sought in the attitude how ravers attends the parties; no spreading good vibes, but getting to a rave to vent everyday illness not so good, i think the way have to be something like "creating something good for the world" but that's it obviously i've met a lot of good people and this in a sick environment is pure magic (sorry for my bad english guys) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

To my ears, both sound the same, only that tekno is darker (if possible) than Gabba. tulpa23 Posted September 11, 2012 Share Posted September 11, 2012 You know, you have to improve your ears in order to appreciate the smallest peculiarity of a specific genre for example, try to ask to a napoletan neo melodic ballads fan what is the differences between death metal and power metal, or what is the differences between dark psy and full on ... i think the answers could be simillar to this: "awwww metal is all the same noisy crap" actually every music listener sculpts his listenings according to his habits, maybe this is sad but thisfact give us a huuuuuuuuge world of different styles of music and god bless the purist i'm a really huge fan of tribe tekno styles, but really, i'm not absolutely able to listen and enjoy music like gabba, old and new school here's a new example of what i mean when i talk about tekno: cheers guys, and sorry for my poorly english Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

IMO the main difference is the philosophy behind the music, pretty much the same way as the difference between goatrance and hard trance back in the days. They were pretty interchangeable yet a goatrancer would never come near a hard trance record because one was made for the "underground" free-party culture whereas the other was oriented towards clubs. It says 'Gabber Until the End', but it isn't really gabber....'cause it don't got the sped-up vocals... It is cheese though, made by 18-year-old kid... I liked gabber because of it was over-the-top hardcore you could never dance to for long (or at all). Hardcore is more serious, made by people who claimed to be criminals...
