Guest vancbc
After some searching of this site, I am still unable to figure out what the term 'full on' means when people are speaking about psytrance. Can anyone help me out here? Cheers
Guest psilo
youve never heard the expression full-on ?? it doesnt just refer to psytrance, oh no, not at all. You can have many things that are full-on , oh yes indeed , a full on car crash for instance, or a full on party, or lets say maybe a full on pregnancy / birth ... (they are certainly full-on) . 'FULL-ON' can be many many things ... anything that pushs your senses to their limits could be construded to be 'full-on', anything that excites you , frightens you, makes your heart beat way fast = full-on So, with the expression 'full-on' put infront of the word/s 'psytrance' it is simply meaning that that type of psytrance is some fuckeduptrancedouthippylovinkindoffunkshitmotherfucker - word . khogg
Psilo is right, Full-on used to be used to describe energtic intense tracks, but it seems to me that Full-on is most often used these days to describe that new breed of Psy that some would say is not true psy or goa at all (but I won't go there). This new style uses a distinctive chunky baseline, is very driving, and is dance floor oriented with a lot of dramatic breaks and ecstatic peaks. Some of it is derivative rubbish, but some of it is pure joy, in my opinion. Astrix and Alien Project are two Full-on artists, but there are many nowadays (Dynamic, Melicia, Safi Connection, Atomic Pulse, Silicon Sound, Psydrop, and the list goes on and on...). Guest Mike D
Full On Psytrance seems to be anything that is around the 143-150BPM with loads of synths ormelodies and very heavy bass line/kick, it usually has a breakbeats type rythmn over the top and samples (often drug related)... Israel is, as with most trance, the best I"ve found with this style, TIP Worl tend to make a more cheesey side of it and GMS and their side projects, well, they just make a vewry generic but good version... 3D Cision is another typical label associated witht his sound, and they seem to have developed their own version, which I find a tad boring... if you want to buy a good sampler, and other will probably lay into me for this, but Raja Ram's stash bag vol.2 is a good dj mix and covers most full ons tyles... or for the darker side check out RitualDance on ACidance Records
Lemmiwinks
"if you want to buy a good sampler, and other will probably lay into me for this, but Raja Ram's stash bag vol.2 is a good dj mix and covers most full ons tyles... or for the darker side check out RitualDance on ACidance Records ;)" or you can chec out any of the Full-On comps (the title's Full On) on Hommega records ;-) I guess that the problem is always the same: people need categories to find the specific kind of music they like, but at the same time it's very hard for artists to fit into a pre-determined category... especially since the category that's "in" sells more... IMO most people refer today to full-on as the contrary of minimal... minimal = few layers, few melodies, "calm sounding"; full-on= lots of layers, lots of melodies, "hard-sounding"... but IMO there are a lot of artists today who simply make "noisy minimal" that the label "full-on" but it isn't full-on at all... like Alien Project... well, I'll stop there, or I'll confuse you even further ;-) SMI²LE
Guest vancbc
Thanks for your replies, guys. I'm familiar with the overall concept of 'full on', but this is the first time I've seen it used with any subgenre of trance music. I thought perhaps it referred to a specific type of psytrance, but I catch the meaning now. ;-) I used to prefer only 'full on' trance or house music, but as I get more into electronic music I'm also starting to appreciate more minimal music with set long builds almost as much as the insta-feel-good appeal and gratification of ecstatic peaks in every track.
