Ake
hey guys, feels a little weird to start a topic for this, but ok. this is about what you call psychill. so tbh, i completely ignored that subgenre until about 2 weeks ago. so i listened to the 1st shpongle album. yeah laugh at me, it's ok. anway, what a magic album! the term masterpiece is almost an understatement. then i checked TIP's downtempo album and also Mystery Of The Yeti, quite trippy as well, very good! so, what about today's "psychill"? i checked the stuff on Ultimae Records but i don't get it. i don't find much psychedelic elements in this music. it's well produced pleasant music but it's just Chillout, not Psychill for me. so is this Shpongle sound just dead? alien samples and shaman sounds, that's what i want when listening to psychedelic downtempo music. radi6404
One thing you must know about this genre is that it is hard to find a lot of similar music. There are very little tracks I know that are like Shpongle. Simon Posford is a true master and is unique in it´s sound. But the new psychill is not like that. It sounds way too shiny and digital just like newschool goa trance. The new artists desire to have a brilliant sound so much that they only care about brillinat glitches, strings and beats instead of producing real music like Shpongle. In my opinion you will have some success finding similar to shpongle when you check out British artists. The Twisted label has a lot of good music and you can check all colaborations with Simon Posford. Ott is similar in sound aswell, it is Psydub but it reminds a lot of Simon Posford. The producer Ott and Simon Posford are very good friends.
Padmapani
it's not shpongle, but have a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhACP4HvFTE you said you don't like ultimae stuff, so i won't mention altar records, what i'd usually suggest, simply because it's great stuff. but you should also check out electypnose's chillout stuff. maybe also gmo vs. dense which is something like a cross between psychill and progressive. radi6404
He just doesn´t want music focused only on brilliant sound.

Ake
thanks so far guys! yeah of course i know about Posford/Ott, etc. and of course i always knew about Are You Shpongled and that it is considered to be a milestone, i just didn't look into it for some reason. i should give Seamoon a try for sure since Simon (real name) is somehow a member of Glitchytonic just like me. i checked Ott's Blumenkraft album but it became cheesy after a short while and i thought by me that Scientist did better dub music in the 80s. but i will listen to the other Ott stuff and also check out more Twisted stuff, thanks again! Dolmot
I also sometimes wonder why exactly Ultimae dominates the chill side of this scene to such extent that almost everything they release ends up on top10 lists. Why not some other generic chillout label? There are plenty. Maybe Ultimae just managed to release loads of good stuff at the right time, thus getting the attention of psy people. Well, admittedy there were many psy-connected artists on the first Fahrenheit Project, for example. Anyway, a few regularly appearing Shpongle-like acts include Entheogenic, Capsula, Shulman and Yggdrasil/Kurbeats. Cygna and Tengri have been neat and somewhat related recently. You can also get good dub like Tara Putra and Globular free on Ektoplazm. Search for Gliese 581C for a starting point. Then there's plenty more if you allow more world and slightly less psychedelic. Padmapani
maybe also shulman or globular? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oti_egSo10s but then again globular can be cheesy in the same way as ott. you won't mind if you're like me and find indian flavoured cheesyness less cheesy than european cheesyness on the other hand i find shpongle way more cheesy than ott. ptn
Did anyone mentioned Globular? Like three or four times? OK, I'll say it too - Globular! Also by accident I've found this site few months ago (edit: I see psyamb.org has already mentioned this one), and I'm 99,9% sure You'll find something worth listening there, great trip through subgenres (there's even one pure Posford mix with bunch of useful trivias). Shpongled247
I too prefer things like Shulman, Entheogenic, Blutech.. And don't forget Androcell. Maybe even Peaking Goddess Collective, very under rated. I think if you are after more psybient stuff rather than chill stuff u will dig those. That's the problem with Ultimae stuff for me, it is a bit too chill a bit too little psychedelic. Enjoy!

exotic
(val)liam - Daydreamer & Dissolving archetypes Both wonderful albums!
healium
Another vote for the Tengri album - "Icaros" (2013) - this is may be my favorite psychill in quite awhile - it's between that and the Kurbeats album.. What I love about the Tengri album is that it's dark - most psychill is not dark - Tengri brings a heavy tech-trance darkness to the album - in terms of mood it reminds me a bit of the first Phutureprimitive album - "Sub Conscious" (which btw is one of the best psychill albums ever in my opinion - definitely check that one out too!). Also, you may not have liked much of the Ultimae label's stuff - but check out the album "Movements" by Solar Fields - this is totally psychedelic music - doesn't get much better than a good Solar Fields track.. Here's a couple killer Tengri tracks and then a Phutureprimitive track, and then a Solar Fields track.
