Guest Maïa
I don't know if you've talked about this, but how is your opinion on the reviews in the review section? If somebody puts 9/10 or 10/10 on an album, shouldn't this mean that the album is exceptional in some way? Not merely good? Sometimes I'm not sure what people mean when they rate an album 9/10 or 10/10, if they mean it's "good" or "amazing". I know that the way you rate something is a very individual thing and after a while you get a feeling about a particular person's taste in music, but still, sometimes I get the feeling that a lot of people are very generous in their reviews. How do you feel about this?
Guest dam10n
It's sort of a gut reaction I think. I do freelance reviews and edit reviews sections on websites and one hardly ever sees anyting lower than a 4/10! So now I tell people, and try to stick to, giving something 5 or 6/10 if it's an average quality release, and use that as a benchmark. But there's nothing wrong with enthusiasm! There are usually enough reviews on this site to read through and formulate a broader idea of what it's like.
Guest Jeff
Yeah, that's right, it seems many people just jump on their computer as soon as they had only one listen to the release they're about to review. Yet I don't think it's misleading : you easily recognize from-the-guts reactions. Sometimes, it becomes nevertheless puzzling to find a "10/10" in almost every review when you search for the best CDs... J.
Guest dam10n
Actually I am always careful about mentioning this here but I run a reviews by email list weekly with the latest psy releases and such, it's nothing much but if you're interested check www.psytrancereviews.btinternet.co.uk there said it, sorry ;o)
Guest Maïa
Nice dam10n, I'll check it out. Btw, Children are really good at reviews, he sometimes gives ratings like 5/10 or 6/10 so if he gives a 10 then you know that he really thinks it's a masterpiece
Guest Elysium Project
I never really read the reviews because of all the responses where people start to argue about the review...It seem a like a waste of time to me! A review is a review not a argument about taste!
Guest Stormbringer
I think most people review records they like and that´s why the rating often is so high. I´ll try harder in the future not to give out too high ratings without any really good reason but to be honest... the ratings aren´t that important anyway. It´s the information in the review that´s important.
Guest phaeton
well maia, i often think children's ratings are extremely harsh ... sometimes he'll even say he likes something and still give it an insufficient mark hehhe .. he gives marks from 1.5/10 to 3/10 for the tip singles compilations, 3/10 for hux flux - cryptic crunch, 4.5/10 for colours of shiva 2 (tip blue+phosphorescent), just to mention some things i could remember .. i think such low ratings should only be given to amateuristic artists who really don't have any talent at all and make their music in a tracker and release it without any decent mastering .. or something i mean if you give an album with artists like psychopod, orichalcum and gms a 1.5/10 .. i just cannot understand it .. have you even tried to listen to the entire cd for once at all ? Tatsu
i don't give much about the ratings anyway, i'm more interrested what people say about the albums in general. track descriptions, what kind of sound it is and so on.

Guest Arvind
Forget ratings, just right a review without them. Rating them is very subjective...
Guest Maïa
Mmm yeah you're right Phaeton. Rating Cryptic Crunch 3/10 is strange. I just remember that I found it so funny when he used to write "This album is really good, I recommend it, I give it 6/10" when everyone else gives it straight 10's or something And I don't really pay that much attention to ratings either usually, but sometimes people don't give you much details about the music in their reviews, they just go "This is awesome! Best album ever! 11/10!". If someone writes a detailed review describing the atmosphere and the vibe of the album then I don't care about ratings. Plurries.. Guest Slidingtrancer
Usually a good review-section of an album is where different opinions have a chance and arguments have been made. I also think Children has been a little harsh on many releases in the past. It all comes down to listening the album in the end anyway. An album like that of the Dub Trees which is hailed by some people here can't really do it for me, the same with Neuromotors album or Space Buddha.... but they are my 'kinda' style of music. I think the reviews are a good way to learn about the psystuff you don't see lying around alot and a nice way to share opinions, but apart from that I ALWAYS try and listen a cd WHEN the REVIEWS or 'vibe'described says I should... Children
To Maïa : hehe thx :-) Actually I never gave 10/10 till then :-) I even gave some 1/10 ratings at the very beginning ... but my opinion about these releases changed a bit since then ... I'd rate them 1 or 2 points more right now (not for each one though).
Children
I've even given a 0.5/10 rating to one album ... :-) But I really didn' t like it at all.
Children
Anyway I don't review many releases now as I don't have the time to do detailed reviews (the 1-2 lines ones I wrote at the beginning of 2000 aren't reviews for me, that was just a very quick opinion about each release in order to start the reviews section, as I had to review more than 100 releases to start it) ... sorry for that :-(
Guest dam10n
which album got a 0.5/10?
Guest Mahoney
I think the gradings are often misleading,,,, that´s why I don´t use them... my rate isn´t that important,,
