Padmapani
in preparation for the "best of 2014" voting i noticed that i haven't listened to much downtempo released this year at all. and apparently i'm not the only one. so what are the best downtempo releases you've found this year? any instant classics that one cannot ignore? was there a good psydub release like globular last year? Bill
Alwoods, Cosmic Replicant (Soul of the Universe), Solar Quest and Androcell. Alwoods and Cosmic Replicant are great from the very first listen. Solar Quest depends on taste though if you're into dub there's a very good chance you'll enjoy that release. I really like Androcell's Imbue, it's not immediately great like his other releases, you need to hear it at least twice before it all comes together, it's subtle but very, very soothing. Padmapani
thanks everyone! i guess i'll have a lot of listening to do, hopefully i'll be finished in time for our poll edit: a few things already sound pretty good after some youtube listening/ektoplazm download: cosmic replicant, androcell, lab's cloud, alwoods (although that seems to be 2013. the altar website and discogs agree here). gmo vs. dense sadly isn't as good as the last two albums. Bill
alwoods (although that seems to be 2013. the altar website and discogs agree here). Oops! 100% correct on that point. I saw Alwoods in Montreal for NYE last year and really got into Long Life Forest right afterward so it feels like a 2014 release to me. Anyway, I blame Paul Eye (wink wink) he posted it first. Bill
http://kalyascintilla.bandcamp.com/album/open-ancient-eyes I was rather disappointed by this one. I'm a HUGE Kalya Scintilla fan but this one was much, much different than all of his other albums and EPs, it has a large focus on invocations and chants and less of a focus on actual music. A lot of the rhythms feel like recycled ideas that he's already covered. It's an interesting album but not one that I will listen to very often. Whereas a lot of his material is great, dirty, glitchy down tempo, this one feels meditative and clean - too clean for my tastes, I suppose. Blubber
oh man pauleye, did u listen to all u posted? my favs: Soulacybin - Gratitude great mix of bass-music, beautiful compositions and imaginative storytelling Kaminanda - Liminal Spaces my favourite psybient producer in the last time. i love how he blends various downtempo grooves with ethereal, eastern-influenced melodies and soundpatterns. always evolving, never wasting time, a musical genius Sephira - Monkey Tales a great follow up of his first effort. dreamy, gloomy downtempo trance on the relaxing side of the medal. if u haven't heard one of his albums do urself a favour Gus Till - Ghosts of the Earth oldie and visionary. a beautiful fusion of ambient, world, space and dance rhythms The Alien Jams my most played downtempo music this year. while some may be distracted by the samey, sometimes generic fusion of downtempo bass and guitarjamming i simply love this release. 80 minutes of relaxing Gilmouresque guitarjamming with contemporary bassgrooves and some farts is what i want. great to have sex to

Maden
I was thinking about posting a similar topic due to my period without ambiant, so thank you for participate. I am listening to Androcell - Inbue and after further try i start to like it, same thing after the note here with Asura - Radio Universe but i focalised in the Moon Pool album from Circular to the track "3 Moons" that i really like a lot. healium
What the world needs is more dark and techy downtempo. Think X-Dream "Radio," Sensient, or Hux Flux - but downtempo type style... I like the psychill style with the vocals and hippy vibe and all that - Shponglle, Entheogenic, Slackbabba - that is all great stuff, but so much of it is in that style.. Ultimae releases have a darker style - certainly not the hippy shanti style - but the Ultimae releases are 1) not really that dark (more like "moody") and 2) certainly not twisted and uber-psychedelic - you don't get a lot of weird tripped out sound effects in Ultimae releases.. We need more dark robotrip downtempo - no vocals, no eastern melodies - twisted melodies, post-apocalyptic soundscapes, and mechanical fx instead.. Paul Eye
Well, not exactly "dark robotrip" downtempo, but Conundrum Concoction is a forest-ish darker downtempo (concept?) album. Kinda trippy and weird, and very good.
Bill
What the world needs is more dark and techy downtempo. Think X-Dream "Radio," Sensient, or Hux Flux - but downtempo type style... Have you tried Merkaba Music? Glitchy, wompy, techy and cerebral. Bogtrotter: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/bogtrotter-catawompus Kalya Scintilla: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/kalya-scintilla-dance-the-spiral-never-ending Resonant Heart compilation: http://www.discogs.com/Kalya-Scintilla-Resonant-Heart/release/4294865 Resonant Mind compilation: http://www.discogs.com/Kalya-Scintilla-Resonant-Mind/release/5766089 Paul, I'm digging "Conundrum Concoction" so far and it's only through the crappy quality of YouTube. Great recommend, can't wait to get this in good quality and hear it through a good system.
Rotwang
What the world needs is more dark and techy downtempo. Think X-Dream "Radio," Sensient, or Hux Flux - but downtempo type style... Personally I'd love to hear something that sounds like a downtempo version of Kindzadza's first album. Anyone know if such a thing exists? Padmapani
We need more dark robotrip downtempo - no vocals, no eastern melodies - twisted melodies, post-apocalyptic soundscapes, and mechanical fx instead.. well, it's not really techy or "robotrip" downtempo, but i'd certainly appreciate more darker downtempo like seamoon or tengri... healium
Thanks for the recommendations - will check them out! Yes though, Conundrum Concoction is one of the finest psychill V/A's ever in my opinion.. The Tnegri album is awesome also - darker indeed.. Conundrum Concoction and Tengri are both excellent but both are in the earthy foresty fairytale realm of psychill.. A downtempo album in the vain of the first Kindzazza album would be great also.. You would think there would be the psychill version of dark minimal or techy maximal psytrance - for some reason though producers make the psychill either Ultimae style or the earthy/hippy/shamanic type..
