Anu Katariina
Hi fellas! Share your experiences concerning common computer use. Let's leave music making stuff out of this because it is discussed elsewhere. I have some questions 1. Once I downloaded Win 10 to replace Win 8.1 I have had severe problems with Mozilla Firefox newest version: "Mozilla Firefox not responding, stop the plugin" alerts have been frequent occurring daily or at worst all the time. Instead, Microsoft Edge browser works like a dream. 2. I got a nasty virus on my computer through F-Secure Premium Antivirus programme: went through some Romania-based travel pages and got the virus from there. I don't rely on paid antivirus programmes so much after this but still ẃant to have one. So what do you recommend? Especially if free antiviruses have worked I'd like to know about that. At the moment I have Bullguard free trial but it is coming to an end in 4 days so I need to find an antivirus. I have Malwarebytes premium and Malwarebytes anti-exploit premium as paid versions until the beginning of 2017, but I need a normal antivirus besides these. Btw, I got rid of the virus by upgrading Win 8.1 to Win 10 :-) 3. How do you plant pics on psynews? I have used our "team radio" to do that but since it has a lot of traffic and thus the space is full my planted pics have vanished and that's a bummer. So where can I plant pics? thanosp81
As far as the antivirus is concerned I would recommend either avg or avast. And don't forget to also install spybot, magic little thing.
Starkraver
^ I just use malwarebytes once in a while to clean up the malwares. No anti virus since last 3/4 years. I hate those fucks. They have caused nothing but problems. Unless you clicky clicky on porno ads and other crap. Malwarebytes + ad blocker works for me. Would really appreciate if someone can suggest a handy light antivirus which doesn't fuck things up :/

Stop using Firefox. No seriously it's a terrible browser with non stop problems and bugs, fuck it. 2. Panda security. Cheap, light on perfomance, impossible to catch a virus. I have recommended it to many ppl and all of them stay with it. 3. What's plant pics?

Anu Katariina
1. Firefox: only using it because it has loads of saved passwords to various sites that I have forgotten (forgotten the passwords). Would be such a job to reset them all. Anyone here using Firefox and having those kinds of probs "Mozilla Firefox not responding" after upgrading to Win 10? 2. I think that with Panda comes Ask toolbar that I hate. It was year 2012 maybe I had this Panda for a while, then removed it because of the toolbar. But I will check it what's the situation now. Thanks @Ormion I have heard from others also that it is a good antivirus so maybe I rely on it in the future. @ Starkraver and thanosp81 Why not antivirus? Does it slow down your computers too much or what? 3. To post pics to psynews because those pics cannot be uploaded directly from my computer picture files but I first need to transfer them online somewhere which is such a stupid system. I have used Neogoa slack so far but it is very unreliable. The pics planted from there will show a few hours or a few days because of the limited space in that site. Starkraver
Use imgur then (for pics) I don't know over time, I have developed a hatred towards them. Oh yes, panda is nice. Ormion is bang on. Also, Firefox sucks! It was a great browser once but right now sucks.you can always import the passwords on to a different browser. Suppose you went ahead and installed chrome, at the beginning it asks, import saved stuff from your default browser or something like that. Anu Katariina
Imgur is all too public, imagine if "Agneton in a rape van somewhere in Romania" posted by Imba in our photo album would be in Imgur I will install Chrome if it asks the saved passwords. MS Edge didn't ask. But first things first = psynews
Purple Sunray
1) There is no point using firefox other than your passwords Firefox is based the on the Chromium engine, but adds custom stuff around it (which often is buggy). I prefer to use Chromium engine without buggy custom stuff, which is Chrome. 2) I do not have any problems with malware. I have no antivirus, just the Windows Defender thing that comes from MS, but I stick to some rules to avoid getting infected at a first place. - Chrome is the only browser (the isolated sandbox architecture brings a huge security increase to compared to like the internet explorer). All shortcuts to IE have been deleted. - In addition to the Chrome sandboxing, Chrome itself runs inside Sandboxie (http://www.sandboxie.com/). Sandboxie is a tool that creates a sandbox for an application. This means that if the application wants to change your system (like it install a virus), it doesn't actually modify it, but it modifies the sandbox. So the virus is not installed to your actually live system, but into a sandbox which can be cleaned up easily. - I never run any downloaded software if I'm not 101% sure that it can be trust. In case of doubt, I run it inside a virtual machine (https://www.virtualbox.org/ ) so that my real system is not affected if that application does something it shouldn't do. 3) I use dropbox for all kind of files I want to upload to the internet
Anu Katariina
@ Purple Sunray: you convinced me big time in favour for Chrome and especially thanks for the dropbox hint
Paul Eye
Latest Firefox on Win10 Pro (upgraded from Win 7 Ultimate) here. I haven't had any problems with it since the swith to W10, and I've been using FF for as long as I can remember. Imgur definitely for images, I don't think anything's ever deleted from there

Starkraver
you are concerned about privacy issues but you are gonna upload on Psynews anyways. Once it's on the web, it's done with.

Nah, there is prob a probability of 1/10 000 that a terrorist or an Indian random stalker (yep, I have blocked two of them) would find psynews per se; I am not familiar with Imgur but I will see into it. Dropbox sounds of an better option, though. And congrats of your 30 something posts of today, you will soon get an individual status to replace that Acid Hunter
LuisBSF
Just wanted to point out that Firefox runs on the gecko engine, not blink (which is what powers chromium and derivatives). Firefox will be switching to a whole new engine called servo at some point in the medium term which is exciting for those of us who've been using Firefox since it was called phoenix 👍

Anu Katariina
I run it on Linux and never have any problems Linux is the thing for no problems, I guess. I am too lazy to learn Linux so I try to cope with Windows.
acid-brain
Linux is the thing for no problems, I guess. I am too lazy to learn Linux so I try to cope with Windows. Probably the right choice. Linux has its fair share of problems too. In particular gives a lot more power to the user which means it is really easy to mess up your whole system. Whereas Windows just messes up your system for you, but probably less catastrophically.

That's why it is not for a woman from the 70's, haha, even though there certainly are some exceptions.

LuisBSF
Linux is great, no need to learn anything you don't already know. Get someone to install Ubuntu alongside windows and give it a spin, you'll be surprised. Good Finnish engineering at the core.
