XoArK Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 I want to know if it is possible to use samples like recorded voices, sampled sounds and melodies from tracks and get in trouble for that. I was planning to do some sound collages with sampled sound. Quote
Padmapani Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 yes, of course. some companies even specialise is finding newly produced content that contains snippets of sampled audio. of course it depends on who owns the copyright and if they care about getting sampled or not, but in general you would have to clear every single sample you're going to use if you want to avoid the possibility of legal troubles. that's why i try to avoid samples in general and when i deviate from that i make sure they are CC0 (or so obscure/not associated with any company that no one could possibly find out i used them). the goa constrictor Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Have you never heard the story regarding The Verve and Bittersweet Symphony? Fuck The Rolling Stones... 1 Quote
pdinklag Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Check whether what you do falls under the idea of fair use, look that up. 1 Quote

Blair Thaumic Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 This is a real album on Bandcamp: https://mcmangos.bandcamp.com/album/gangnam-access-memories Unless you're charging money for your music, I don't think sample collages or mashups will get you in trouble. 2 Quote
antic604 Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 If your music is ever released - even for free - then good practice is to list the sources of sounds you used and their copyright owners. 1 Quote
