Guest tmel
I discovered psytrance about a year ago which totally changed my attitude towards music. I spent a lot of money on a cd-player, a headphone amplifier and headphones and started buying cds for the first time in my life. Listening to a quality production with my rig is pure bliss, but in case of a bad one it can be annoying at times. I don't have that many cds yet, but out of the ones I have at this time I'd say these have the best sound quality: 1. Hallucinogen - The Lone Deranger 2. Cosma - Simplicity (Too bad Nonstop doesn't sound as crisp) 3. Sandman - Psychotoons +all the Infected Mushroom albums. And here are some I was disappointed with: Both Shpongle albums Prometheus - Robot-O-Chan. (Remember I'm only talking about sound quality, otherwise I love these) Please tell your opinions
Guest Noope
If you lke good sound quality but shitty music: try some commersial stuff like Nelly, Jay-z, brittney S, Madonna. They have good sound quality. if you want good music and good quality: Pink floyd good music, "ok" sound quality: S.posfors, juno reactor good music, bad quality: old psytrance bad music bad quality: New psytrance
Guest healium
I don't understand how you can say that Brittany Spears and such has better sound quality than psytrance - are you nuts?! Most commercial stuff is so flat and 2D in production, while most psytrance is 3D production and sound manipulation wizardry.. Have you ever listend to Paul Okenfold on good headphones - effin terrible... The following I can think of as being the most impressive to me: Hux Flux - Division by Zero (the most amazing sound manipulation I've ever heard, hand's down) X-Dream - Radio Koxbox - Dragon Tales Hallucinogen - The Lone Deranger Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible Sandman - Psychotoones Psysex - Hardcore Blastoff
Guest yaomabcab
the bad ones - Liquid Beach by Saafi Brothers, Love Philtre Magick by Akasha, Juno Reactor
khogg
Good sound quality is very subjective. Some like their music dark and muddy, and there are artists who produce that way on purpose. It all comes down to taste. I personally am not a Shpongle worshiper, but I can appreciate them for sure. You will find a large number of people who would disagree with you that Shpongle has poor sound quality. As for really crisp clear sound quality, newer progressive and/or minimal, and some full on releases have "good" sound quality in that way. Sound quality in that way does not always equal inspiring music however...
Guest Bahamut
to my taste at least SOME of the material from... Juno Reactor, Shpongle, Saiko Pod, Son Kite, Human Blue ...has really excellent allround sound quality, not only compared to other psy but also compared to other electronic (dance) music
Guest antic
as far as new albums go, I'd reccomend: 1. Orion (Artificial Frequencies) - very crispy with many intelligent and not so obvious at first listen ideas, incredibly groovey sound patterns and very clean sound 2. Deedrah (Body & Soul) - somehow oldschoolish sounding, but with new production quality and has many dirty and lo-fi sounds but it's all made on purpose, 3. Huxflux (Division by Zero) - this one is little low on trebels I think, but arangement ideas and the way he programmed it all is amazing. Guest antic
oh, and the new rinkadink album has great sound quality, though the music is mainly redundant full-on without nothing interesting in it
Guest tmel
To be more precise what I meant with sound quality, I was talking about distinct flaws in the sound not about an individual signature that some like and some don't. For example I didn't mean Shpongle albums sound flat or anything like that. They mostly sound really good, but then there are many parts that just sound distorted and grainy, in my opinion totally false. Like a badly tuned radio station.. Do some people really like unclean sound?
Guest madly in luv with twisted
r0bot-0-chan has like the best sound quality ever..

" - I think this was made on purpose and for me it's a pure genius when somebody knows how to do a "false" melodies which still sound right. and shpongle / younger brother is a great example of this technique! i didn't hear prometheus yet, but I'm sure - since it's Benji from younger brother - that is also amazing, not only musically but also technically

Guest tmel
That really makes me consider bying their latest album even though I'm not actually a big fan of their music. Listening to perfect sound is just such a pleasure. Of course not to the point that I would buy music I don't like at all. Ap is still decent for my taste. Guest Towelie
noope said it.. i got this pink floyd - dark side of the moon document where they explain how some sounds are made and so on.. so much more respect to them than some psytrance
Guest Noope
Healium: "I don't understand how you can say that Brittany Spears and such has better sound quality than psytrance - are you nuts?!" -> of course i'm nuts, otherwise i wouldn't be in this scene... :-) -> i don't know how much psytrance you have been listening to but do yourself a favour and listen to some more and you'll see that most of the stuff has some really shitty production, it's "home made". (and that is the way it should be). Most commercial stuff is so flat and 2D in production, while most psytrance is 3D production and sound manipulation wizardry... -> Sorry, i havn't heard any psytrance with 3D sounds yet(at least not without a fat dose of muhies). Yes there are some cool effects around but thats not what i call good production Have you ever listend to Paul Okenfold on good headphones - effin terrible... ->Paul Okenfold... this is as commersial as Brittney. Guest grahf
Ott, Future Sound of London, and Amon Tobin - all have what I would call an "organic" sound. Some may call it muddy, but it's like scratchy vinyl, with an indefinable element of warmth. Especially Amon Tobin. All his music is built from samples, but it sounds amazing nonetheless. Every stereo I've played him on makes the cd sound distinctly different, and there seems to be no upper limit on how good it can sound. Guest healium
Noope - alright well I just listen to the albums I buy, and they're most all by well known Psy acts like the ones I mentioned - I have heard psytrance with lousy sound and production tho - Texas Faggot comes to mind (I don't like the way Saiko-Pod sounds either).. I know Paul Okenfold is commercial, that's why I mentioned him! He has millions of dollars and his music is horribly produced - have you ever listened to it?! There's virtually no sound panning at all, it's so flat.. When I say "3D" I mean to say the way psytrance music is produced with heavy amounts of sound panning and fading in and out - in others words, it's very "trippy" and done in a hi-tech way. Commercial stuff like you mentioned has virtually none of this, it's produced in a very simplistic and unskilled way... That's why it's such a joy to listen to good psytrance on headphones, because the artists are masters at creating these spacious and thrilling soundscapes, the sound production is insane... Guest Subatomic Vision
Younger Brother sounds amazing, the new Prometheus sounds very 'wide' in stereoimaging Hux Flux, Shpongle, Hujaboy, GMS...
Guest dom
Hujaboy, sonic tonic is incredible...especially track 5...man that tune gives my speakers a good workout! Also, coverting vegetarians is definately the best IM album in terms of nice crisp sound, just listen to the first couple of mins of Song Pong. Guest Gussigan
basically, my opinion of sound quality is an album that has good music that suits the production style so while some psy may sound badly produced, does it actually suit it? like grahf said about amon tobin is absolutely right... tobin's stuff does almost sound badly produced but it's not... the way it sounds is what gives it that warmth and makes it work
Guest junjal
Psysex / hardcore blastoff and come in peace amazing dynamic and definition!
Guest Frontier Psychiatrist
I'm sure that if Cosma reads this thread he laughs his ass with happiness. Why? Because his first album he created with Sound Blaster Live and with lame speakers. The only ones in the scene that i really apreciate soundwise are: Simon Posford Avi Algranati (Why no one mentioned him????) Infected Mushroom Dado (The last album has amazing sound) Prometheus for sure OTT (he is pro technician, worked with Sinead O' Connor, James and more)
