WTF ? Is that for real ? Why did they decide that ? Based on what ? If that's true I would really start thinking of abandoning trance completely ( huh, that was a lie ), but I am actually FURIOUS ! All of the best artists decided to quit : Transwave ( back in 96 ), UX ( back in 97 ), Power Source ( back in 2000 ), Indoor/Inscape/Phreaky ( back in 97 ), Hallucinogen is rarely making any trance stuff, MFG ( back in 2001 ), Koxbox ( last year )...Why do they all had to quit ? Not a chance that is based on lack of ideas ! They had plenty of ideas ! What is wrong with people ? If I hear some other break soon, I'll get a breakdown too...Horrible ! And please, ;/, explain us how did that happen?

Well, just for not getting you more furious, i'll avoid here the rumours about new Etnica cd style :(

(btw: anyone in here knows Wayann?)

The reason?

the Occidental God: money.

Nothing more.

Nothing left behind.

No more.

to seraph:

transwave did splitt, and so did koxbox but all the artists present in those projects still make trance (deedrah, absolum, koxbox and psychopod). hallucinogen is also planning a new album btw...

basically i think at some point they started to have different tastes, or they just want to make music on their own...

What i meant to say is that there aren't any more of those concepts....strong,passionate,uncompromising concepts they had, making under those projects. Sure that Dado and Christophe are making music still, but there hasn't been anything released from Power Source at all, except of 2 Power Course songs, nor MFG is functioning anymore...Not to mention wonderful UX, after which Slide continued making for some time but in the end quit...There isn't that spirit anymore...I respect changing styles, having different tastes but trance scene didn't need another great project colapsing especially now, in this sea of new artits coming out every day...bringing nothing new to the scene...and as some guy stated above doing copy-paste of something that was truly wonderful and captivating before...

Pleiadians was the last outpost for wonderful melodic psytrance.

But there are new artists producing that oldschoolsound, my own project for instance...

well if this can comfort you, I personally found that the worst CDs I bought was new stuff by artists who used to be masters ie. AP - Amen, new Dado (Deedrah), new Christophe (Absolum), new Etnica, new Graham Woods (Blowfish), new MWNN, new Bilbo Bagginz (Mumbo Jumbo), new Total Eclipse, new Shakta... they ALL dissapointed me bigtime!! Actually I find it a good idea that an artist just stops completely when he runs out of ideas rather than merely make a mediocre copy of the stuff around today... at least that way their fans still respect them and they go down memory lane as true artists... Imagine you would've bought some CD with the name "Pleiadians" on it and thought it'd bring back the lost feeling of real trance only to see it's just another clone of the GMS style...

you gotta admit, the very essence of psychedelic music is sonic novelty, and hearing almost the exact same full-on bassline and cheesy melody is getting really old. It's time for a change in this music.

It changed once when the original goa trance gave way to minimal, when people got tired of melodies. it changed again when people wanted a more "full" sound back. But now we're tired of the same bassline, wizzy sound, and drug sample in every track. Give us back deep spirituality and psychedelic sounds, but don't lose modern production quality and huge basslines.

If enough people want something new, then somebody out there will start making it. In fact, I'm sure there already are artists pushing back the boundaries. Find them.

"I'm sure there already are artists pushing back the boundaries"

yeah well that's exactly it IMO, people rely on artists who broke boundaries years ago by hoping that they are gonna break new boundaries with their new release... but that's never the case... You always need fresh blood to do new revolutionary stuff...

I agree with both of you, Lemmi and Grahf, but that is exactly what I was talking about Graph, to reproduce old spirituality in a new, fresh, brilliant way...And I do admit that even those active masters got lazy nowadays. I really miss the days of progressive goa trance that started to develop in 99 after which I was really expecting best music to come but it suddenly ended in year 2000 with the minimal era...If it continued from there and didn't minimalise itself so soon, I think that by now trance would have developed into something more mesmerising, twisted, spiritual and primal...Instead of progressing the sound for spiritual causes, the sound got progressed for mental and intellectual causes...

I've long thought Simon Posford to be the Savior of Psytrance... he was one of the first artists of the genre I discovered, and I've never really found anything that matches him. But, I was listening to Twisted the other day, and in some ways I don't think he's ever matched that original work. Maybe the 3rd Shpongle album will completely blow us away, maybe not. At the very least I'm glad he broke free of the limitations of 4/4 trance to evolve his style.

Infected Mushroom are going soft, the trance side of Converting Vegitarians sounded very clubby to me.

Eat Static have a very unique sound, but they aren't breaking much too new ground these days (except for that bitchin' remix of And The Day Turned to Night).

The Texas Fags and other Finnish artists have always seemed pretty "out there," but no-one pays much attention to them it seems.

I don't know what the "next level" in psytrance will sound like, and Lemmiwinks is certainly right that well-established artists are not going to be the ones pushing the boundaries. Perhaps the scene is becoming too large and fractured already for any one new trend to trigger a paradigm shift? Each in their separate camps: full-on, prog, dark/tech/minimal, then the few old-schoolers.

Maybe psy-breaks will get big. It's within the realm of possibility I'd say... in fact it happened to the prog house scene, and spawned a new genre: prog breaks. Now a lot of the big name progressive dj's play a few breaks tracks in their sets.
