So, I decided I need to stop buying CDs, simply because:

- I've really run out of space to store them,

- they cost more, both per release and because of shipping fees,

- the hassle with trying to find where & how to order CDs from different labels and artists to optimise shipping cost is getting really tiresome,

- I never really use the CDs anymore, because I either d/l the files that come along (Bandcamp, Psyshop, etc.) or rip the CD and leave it on the shelf,

- the labels / artists get bigger cut, because I pay them directly and not to the distributors, pressing plants, transportation companies, etc.

So, today instead of going to Psyshop to get my - shameful, I admit - Nano Rec. fix I bought their 3 recent releases via their newly opened Bandcamp store taking advantage of 35% for full catalogue (I really advice on checking Pogo's "Rock Your Soul", not sure about the other two...). I also did the same with new Hypnoxocks album, bought via Goa Madness Bandcamp store that also opened just recently!

Fells so liberating, although it's hard - I got all Goa Madness releases on CDs thus far! The real struggle will come when there's new release by Suntrip, or Zion604, or Cronomi, etc.  :o

Who's with me? Let's support ourselves to pull through :)

I dont hold on to many materialistic items, so for sure I'll let CD's go and focus on digital. I think you pointed out many good points of why
.. Spare the nature when you can, if you can, if you wanna' (im still a big fan of the bandcamp ""get both digi and physical product.)

:D

Sorry, but suddenly I feel lighter and more free :)

By creating the topic - even if no one would support me - I draw the line in the sand, so to speak. I already see it's gonna be hard, especially for things I know I'd love or collector items like the one you release or Dat or Global Sect. But I just don't see the point in buying them anymore. I actually think what to do with the stuff that I already have...

Kinda remings me about my recent (very hard) decision to stop using Access Virus in my music and go all software (nobody cares but I need to say it out loud to define the point of no return lol)

On topic - i believe I bought my last CD in 2009 or so.

I totally get this!

The decision was also partially triggered by me coming back (slooooowly...) to writing music and realising that it all happens nowadays in a computer anyway. So I started to ask myself why I need to have the product of it physically? If I ever write something that someone would like to hear, would I care if it was printed on CD? Don't think so anymore.

I know it's a good choice, just gotta have strength & stick with it :)

I just started going mostly digital with music purchases too. Came about after I moved 6 months ago and realized having to move like 600+ CDs was really fucking annoying lol. It's still hard for me to actually click that buy button in bandcamp, but at least bandcamp is a great site that makes it really easy. My only concern with digital releases is that very few, if any, labels are utilizing that format to the fullest. I mean now you've got much less overhead for releases, why not include more stuff in a digital release? I mean most of the time you don't even get the artwork, you just get a jpg of the cover. Oh well, still easier than storing hundreds and hundreds of CDs, I suppose...

I agree, but the problem is the continuing refusal of some labels to release digital music (eg, the Mind Rewind series from DAT Mafia Recordings).

(Tell me again why digital releases can't support charitable causes?)

It's ridiculous how we are attracted to something tangible even when it is completely pointless. I still don't have enough balls to throw my CD collection itno thrash though I don't care about 90% of the music anymore.

Must be the propblem of older generation. When some younger producers ask "what VSTi was used in that Ethnica track of 1996?" this rings a bell :) I mean people see music as something that is made digiatlly, distributed digitally and never ever leaves the computer

While we're on the topic, why don't more labels drop the prices of older digital releases?  I think this would encourage people to buy more music to fill out their collections.

Yeah, that would be awesome! Just today I found out that Twisted has a bandcamp store with most of their greatest releases (too bad no compilations there...) but everything is 7GBP, which is too much. If they were like 2-3GBP per album I'd buy them, even if I have everything already on CD. But then again, for new clients it's probably a very nice price.

This reminded me - it's gonna be difficult not buying the "Codex 6" CD when it comes out. Or that X-Dream 2CD remix album. Fuck  :(

High res. artwork image is of course cool to get also, both for the consumer wanting to dive into art, maybe print it out, and the artist that make it, so people get to enjoy it, in HQ.

Well, maybe because of our post, or you just didnt look deep enough. The albums is 7, and a few EPs are 7, like Mi alooney. But he rest of EPs, like Space Pussy is 2, and 2,5 ...gbp.. Ive only so far looked at Hallucinogen, and not the others. Btw, you got the Simon Posford APP? 2funny

I was expecting this to be a support group for those lamenting the rise of digital-only releases.  Honestly, I would buy more trance music if more was more easily available in hard format.  I don't really value downloads that much and if you aren't making it available in WAV or some other lossless format why would I bother to pay for it when I can listen to it on an HD YouTube video for free?  I pretty much only pay for digital music if there's no other way to find a high-quality version of it or if they explicitly offer it in WAV.

I like holding the actual physical thing in my hand when it comes to music.  It's totally different from the way I view movies and TV, where I would rather watch it on Netflix.  There is a certain joy that comes from unwrapping a new disc and reading through the liner notes that people are forgetting or worse, for the younger folks, just never experiencing it in the first place.

Bandcamp gives you the option to d/l wavs or flacs, so what's your excuse again? I'm buying (bought) few dozens of CDs every year, but I'm pretty sure in last 2 or 3 years I've not unwraped any of them because I got the files along with the plastic and liner notes have become the thing of the past with very few notable exceptions, like 'collector' releases from DAT or Global Sect. Otherwise it's just credits, mastering & artwork info, which I can find elsewhere.

No, this thread is not for you so please go somewhere else :)

i don't like to go fully digital either (it just feels completely different when you browse through the booklet and enjoy the artwork while listening to the album), but i start to see the inevitability of the switch coming. after the last shipment arrived, my external cd drive wouldn't read the cds, so i had to insert the discs at an older computer in the house. the whole process of ripping 3 cds and transferring it to my library took half an hour. that's certainly not a way for the future ;)

in that case i can suggest you buy the cd then rip the files to flac or mp3 and sell the cd second hand

will actually cost less since youll get back most of the price you paid initially

That might work BUT there's shipping costs (and delays) on the buy side, no guarantee of an after-market on the sell side, AND why is this even necessary in 2017?  Seems like a real kludge when the correct solution is so obvious.

You people with your CD-albums wrapped in plastic. 1. dont you want to have a feel/see/read inside the booklet (if any pages at all.. and if not already someone put the whole bookelet on discogs and beiing a nerd at it, you prob. bought 2 releases or more, one to save with plastic, and one to do enjoy normally)? 2. The value of the album which is something old collectors goes for, is only dropping (?) and now in the few last years the value on most to many CD-albums has dropped radically and that -lol- got to piss many of you hard core have my CDs in wrepper in the closet to in the future sell and become millionairs, off. Cause the releases are "all" online, even Space Pussy by Hallucinogen. Sure, to have the original, is awesome. But the Single is no longer that hard to get in good sound quality, actually, you can get it in best sound quality for 2 £ at the Twisted Bandcamp (yey!). Same goes for Ultimae Records, which are availible for all to listen, purches/own and enjoy, not only the ones with a wrapped original copy in their safe.

*Im no collector, like many others are. I buy CDs, releases. Sure, but I unwrap the plastic, and have a feel of the release, and a read, and admire the artwork.

Well, Ok when I got the Psykovsky album the ,,new" one, I made a choise to buy extra copy, because this beauty,, I didnt want to unwrap. The CD-album material and cuts are extraordenery nice, so beautiful and its a pleasure to open it up and put the CD(s) in the CDJ. And the music inside is in its details down to the trancedance is vvery admirible. *maybe a bit too many collabs to my personal taste though.

Is there a 3.

To contradict my self, this one will maybe never be dropped in any price, and not to be found on any digital shop .... https://www.discogs.com/Various-Natraj-Tempel-Psychedelic-Trance-Compilation/release/328741which is quit the stellar of a Psychedelic Goa Trance Compilation.

The Mind Rewind comps have a specific finite amount that were allowed to be pressed. Going digital complicates this.

It's not too difficult of a concept.

Compilations of the 90's are another story. Your example is something far from essential; all tracks are easily available on other humanly priced CDs.

I have an illegal download of that

Are there really people that collect goa/psy to profit in the future? It's very unlikely that most of 'our' releases will be worth anything in the future, so if that's your reason to hold on to plastic then reconsider your ways...

BTW, over the weekend one drawback of going all-digital became apparent: it's now much easier to click that "buy" button.

I'll probably spend less per release, but will possibly buy more overall (incl. EPs and such smaller releases that I wouldn't have otherwise). But it's great knowing, that I can buy stuff at the source, maximising the share of my money that actually support the artists & labels. Feels so good :)
