Who makes the music ?!

Hi guys,

Well, for many years I wonder what does the terms ENGINEERED and PRODUCED mean.

For sure, when you look at the credits of a track, WRITTEN BY means that it’s the one that created the tune, note by note, drum by drum, step by step…

But what the hell do the engineers and producers do ?

How much are they involved in the music ?

Are they necessary for the track to exist ?

If you have some info…

Thanks in advance.

well I don't have much insider knowledge either but from what I understand a producer is the one that ensures that the track sounds good (ie. he playes with the different layers and sounds to see which one is heard "on top" and which is heard in the background, or effects like pan right/ pan left speaker, intensity of the bassline, etc.). You can create a perfect track but if it all sounds muffled and has a whimpy bassline, then it will sound lie shit and noone will like it. So the producer actually DOES play a crucial part in the creation process.

This is somewhat tricky actually. In music, the term producer can mean a lot of different things, in goa trance though, the producer is actually the composer and basically the artist is the producer. In other kinds of music it is where the term becomes confusing. In pop music the producer can be the guy who writes the check and that's it!! But as Lemmi said, sometimes it is the guy that helps a song come together as a whole. He tells the musicians what to play and what not to play, or decides what is more comercially oriented and that kind of shit...

I am here :-)

Producer = A person who have the overall picture of the production of the music. A person that inspire the artists and come with positive/negative critism and inputs.

As said it's true that in most psy/progressive/ambient releases ect. there's rarely any producer involved.

Engineer = A technical minded person that assist the artist/band with all from how to wire a synth to the computer to other technical questions. A kind of Musical "Handyman". The Engineer also in many cases know about studio recording techniques ect.

Thats called a studio owner...lol Normally a real studio (with lots of hardware in the million dollar category) is owned by major Record labels, International Studio Syndicates ect.

A small home studio based on mostly software in a computer is rarely that expensive and is normally owned by the artist/band.
