Dloading VERY old trance - what do you think?

So lately I've discovered that our national media library has shitloads of very old trance releases (i mean stuff BEFORE 1995). After all, belgian record lables were the pioneers in releasing this stuff back in the days...

And I was thinking, since most of this stuff has been out of print for a long long time, could it be possible to make a site on oldchool where we could dload such tracks? I mean, technically it's illegal to offer tracks for free but in this case the CDs have been out of print for a long long time and most of the artists aren't even known by today's psytrancers. It could only bring fame to long-lost names like Aquila, Paranoia, Lumukanda, Greater than One, Bulbawee, etc. Maybe this could even spark re-issues of remastered copies of this stuff? Personally I can only see positive outcomes for this.

So what do you people think? And I'm especially interested in EPs point of view since he is an artist and probably is one of the rare people who HAS heard of these acts... But any input is welcome :) Maybe even someone with some bandwith and technical skills to spare?

Juridically, but not morally, if we're speaking about old discontinued and forgotten CD's that is practically impossible to buy anywhere and can only be found in the collections of a few hardcore collectors who've been around for a long time.

Otherwise, I've discovered the track "Acts of Sensation" by a group called Intact to be one of those early Goa-trance tracks with acid-sounds. It might not even be meant to be goa-trance but early techno, but still sounds very hypnotic and has those characteristic science / mythical / sci-fi etc. samples akin to psy-trance. In fact, I've lately been surprised at how much some late 80's / early 90's techno tracks (the way some techno sounded like then before it all turned shit) sound like a prototype for early goa-trance, like Sleepwalkers "I got you" or "Contrast" by Recall IV. And of course, the more wellknown classics "Choice" and "Children of the Future" by Trilithon.

I'd love to be able to help out with a history-of-trance sort of site that lets users download rare/OOP tracks... morally I see no problem, though to be perfectly clean one must track down the original author and ask permission where possible. But aside from that, what can anyone do? What's the worst that can happen? A cease & desist letter, right? No one's going to prosecute over international borders for some old music no one barely listens to anymore. I can't say for certain, but wouldn't artists of the old style be a little honoured that their music might live again in some ears, many years down the road from whence it originated?

yep, that's more or less what I thought. That's why I'd apreciate the input of some artists. How would they feel in such situations?

For example EP, I've found in the list of old releases one of your release called "Master of the Rainforest". To my knowledge noone even knows of this release! How would you feel if people, after all these years, could dload freely the tracks on it? (and I haven't seen the tracklist so if the tracks were re-issued on other available albums, then you'll obviously be against, that i can understand, but if they're all out of print?)

That will be possible quite soon from my own website ;) I prefer that I am the one that offer this service from my website. But the idea is good if the artist(s) agree.

There must be someone that know it since it sold almost 5000 copies. But it's a long time ago so who knows.

Maybe they used it as frisbee's :-)

I have it, and it still sounds great! Timeless music I will never get tired of!

From an "egoistic" collectors view, something like that is kind of bad, since the collectors has used tons of time and money to hunt down those rare goodies... If everybody suddenly can download it for free, it isn't that exclusive anymore, and the value goes down... But I also perfectly understand those who really want those tracks, but can't find it... Checking ebay everyday for 5 years can also be a solution....:)

Talking about dissappearing copies of releases... It's really weird how rare some of those old goa records are, even if there are a lot of copies made. During collecting from the beginning of the 90s to today, I have noticed that CD singles become much more rare than albums. I think one of the reasons is actually that many record shops throw them in the garbage after some time...! I am also surprised of some places I have found rare goa releases, like in small rock bars hidden under a lot of dust...

Collecting is fun. You can probably compare it with hunting animals or fishing. When I suddenly find a record I have been looking for for ten years, it gives me a really good kick... But it can also become a bit too intense and expensive...

This is what Internet mp3 / flac / aac music distribution is important for :-)

The ideal solution would be that the artist gets paid a small fee, and the distributor (as someone will have to pay for download bandwidth) gets a *minimal* cut (unlike iTunes 30c or whatever they make per download).

That way the music becomes easily accessible, easier than through "pirate" channels at least. *And* you get to support the artist... Many bonus perks could be offered to paying customers through direct contact with the artists etc.

I am actually working on a solution which aims at fulfilling this problem at the moment.

I will let you know more information as I progress through the development, as I believe a few other people are working on similar solutions as we speak.

I will get in contact with you EP at some point, it would be good to hear an artists perspective of the ideas I have :-)
