Guest koolaid
Right, I know we all hate this subject so let's get it over with quickly ;-) I am researching into ways of categorising psy-trance to help new and expert users find CD's that they will like. Sometimes categorising by artist, album title, date, label and rating just isn't enough as some people only like certain styles of psy eg. only "goa"/morning sounding psy. In which case, having formally defined and agreed upon definitions for each style becomes necessary. (I acknowledge that albums / compilations may contain a mixture of a few different sub-genre's) So I ask you: 1. Have you seen any good attempts at sub-genre definitions? 2. Can you think of any different better ways to categorise a psy database?
Guest koolaid
2. One alternative that has been proposed: "These are the categories; 1. Home listening. This would include music that has enough variations to be able to hold your attention enough at home. Speed and style are secondary here, the point is, would you listen that album at home if you had the chance, without getting bored of it pretty soon. 2. Party music. All the monotone, full on, repetitive, extatic, hallucinogenic party rocking music. 3. Tripping music. Fuel for your imagination, force to break the limits of your sociological conditioning, sounds to see and smell and touch, emotions to get and give, new horizons and ideas." - shaman The problem here is that a good album will fit all three categories ;-) But maybe that is also a good thing. The problem comes when you like all three categories...
Guest koolaid
1. Damn it's difficult creating a list of categories... Here's a quick attempt at breaking it down: dark psy trance - dark driving night time melodies eg psychotic micro, azax syndrome, osom minimal trance - bass driven techno with very subtle layer changes used to create a psychedelic soundscape - shiva chandra, tech trance - techno with slight trance influences - midimiliz, spirallianz, x-dream radio goa / melodic psy trance - songs more of a journey, often with indian scales - astral projection, man with no name, transwave, shakta industrial goa - Harsh, dark-soudning goa, with distorted noises, fast, indsutrial-inflenced. Examples: Battle of the Future Buddhas, Tim Schuldt - Single Collection, Ka-Sol progressive trance - starts out minimal and gradually layers build to become richer and fuller, without ever becoming too intense. ticon, atmos, beat bizarre, human blue full on - music which peaks with maximum intensity of both beats and synths - pleadians, neo psy / isratrance - psy which follows a more formulaic pattern as defined by gms, astrix, talamasca, alien project funky psy/finnish trance - haltya, loopus in fabula psy chill - downbeat chilled music with psychedelic influences / created by psy artists psy breaks - breakbeat with psychedelic influences eg. eat static, violet vision ambient - chilled out music with no beat, can be calming and soothing or take you on a dark / futuristic trip A bit has been stolen from lemmiwinks definitions list found over here. Guest Mike D
Personally I"d leave it at psytrance and ambient... but if you insist: Morning trance (including much of the so called progressive scene) Sunset trance (I"d includ labels such as Twisted, TIP World, Spun, 3D Vision) Night trance (Labels such as Digital Psionics, Paravati, Serephen, Gravity Plus, Horns and Hoofs, Boshke Beats etc) Ambient (we all know what this is) categories tend to ruin music, not enhance, why not just call it trance? Thats all it was called in the beginning...
Guest Cleric
I think there are currently 4 major sub-genres in psytrance they are: 1. FULL-ON (gms, scazi, alient project, atomic pulse, neuromotor, astrix etc etc..) 2. TECHTRANCE aka PSYTECHNO (x-dream, the delta, midimiliz, boshke beats) 3. PROGRESSIVE (atmos, son kite. freq, ticon etc..) 4. MINIMAL (shiva chandra, antix, intact instinct, paste, xv-killist)

Guest koolaid
I like Cleric's definitions too... nice and simple. Mike d's could be very cool, but could be open to mis-interpretation. mike d: "categories tend to ruin music, not enhance, why not just call it trance? " Some people are fussy with what they like, or may not have the money to explore every style. When buying CD's knowing the category of music can really help. When I'm clubbing and for home listening I personally like nearly all good psy... except for the most generic stuff like Astrix & gms. Guest Stor i Keften
I can't see a reason to divide music into genres. No need to make it more complicated as it allready is.
