Guest mkay11
regarding the nord lead i just bought the number 2 and i have only just started using it but in regards to gettting out good noises you have to use the sounds on there change them around and then save them then from there you can use two - four banks of sounds layered upon each other to create some kick ass weird noises.. so when you play a note it will play each of the sounds you have allocated to the four banks... plus split the keyboard and do this aswell playing sounds down one end and others at the other.......then you can save these as performances and go from there again....... though you will need a pcmcia card to save plenty of examples.... Guest schism
all these virtual machines are nearly the same, if you know subtractive synthesis u can get similar results out of most of them the main thing u r looking for in newer synths is whether or not u like the filter...is it smooth etc. most of the modulation capabilities are probably more vast than u'll ever get around to using on the later generation vas regarding x-dream and etnica using the q- so what? first, look at all the other gear they use and have used. second, their new music doesn't have any many melodies so they could use a sine wave from almost any synth and go boom boom boom. third, look at all the fx they add- u won't be able to tell in a mix other than recognizing a certain filter tweak etc. fourth, look at how long they've been making music...they're pros and can make good music with anything. i guess what i am saying is talent makes music not gear. if you're good u can make good music with almost anything. btw i have a nord lead 3 and while its ok, it won't replace a good analog synth. the q is the same way- it sounds alright, its very flexible, but it really depends on your needs. for my needs, i'd rather have 1 note of goodness than 10 of vanilla sounds. unfortunately analog comes at a price most ppl can't afford, whether money or lack of features... Guest Zhoro
Trancer, I suggest subscribing to the Waldorf users list (it's on their website). You can also browse the archives for the list. I'm sure you'll learn a lot about the Q. The new OS 3.0 added some cool features like the PPG filter. I just got a 32-voice rack version but I've hardly scratched the surface on it. By all indications though, it's well worth the money I paid for it (which wasn't all that much - around $1300 w/ s&h from Germany).
Guest schism
Waldorf Q is very cheap from www.musicians-gear.com But I wouldn't recommend joing the forum...all they do is argue about which color is better and how Waldorf does a shitty packaging job Try www.sonicstate.com and www.the-gas-station for web-based info

Guest hogus
I also fell in love with the Q the moment I heard it. What I love about it isn't just the perfect clear sound it produces but the modularity of it. You can route the generators and controllers all over the place, and I think it can create a very wide variety of sounds. I heard the virus on the same day. And yes it produces a very powerful interesting sound but after a while the sounds all start feeling the same whereas with the Q the sheer amount of sounds and effects blows you away. They could lock me up in an insane asylum with it for a year and I'd be perfectly happy tweaking knobs day in and day out. The JP-8080 Didn't impress me at all. Its allright quality but I'm not very fond of the Roland sound.
Guest Elysium Project
I agree schism......... My point exactly and by the way x-dream have many favorite machines........ I have many favorite machines too........ People should really make up their own minds on what gear to use...that way we might see more unique music and not the same old sound over and over again........
