Buying a midi-keyboard...

Within a few weeks i'm gonna buy a midi-keyboard to use with software( Reason, Nuendo, Reaktor, Logic, that sorta thing) . I need a good keyboard with many options and handy to work with, I need to be able to work with it for years to come. I'd go for less keys if there'd be a doubt between more keys or more knobs.

I'm planning on buying sound modules in a few years. I have a nice system,( nothing more than nice) p3-500 with a SBlive! 1024 Plat. ( I know I need another soundcard.... That'll be my next buy. I study so i don't generate any money really)

I want knobs ( a modulation wheel, ADSR, Cutoff/resonance), I'm not gonna order online ( I have no visa..or other bullshit) and I have to spend about 450 guilders which must equal something like 450/2.1= 200 up till 225$

Any suggestions?

Good question man! I am also planning on gettting a midi-keyboard and I am in a very similar situation like you. I am a student (so I dont have much money),I want to use it with Reason,Reaktor and Cubase and I want one which is flexible, with pitch and modulation wheel and preferrably some knobs for cutoff etc. (and I have SB Live! card just like you)

I was actually thinking of going to the shop and buying today.

Well... If you are planning on just getting a controller midi keyboard you wont get knobs, unless you get an expensive one. I suggest you save your money for an actual anolog board cause with that synth, you can still control all your programs such as reaktor and reasons knobs, but you'll have hands on control on sounds that you make in your userbanks and such. Look for used gear, best way to buy. Goodluck.

I get 16 knobs, for $200, don't remember the name of midi-controller, but it's available at www.musikborsen.se.

I've tried it in the store and it worked very nice.

Well CID most Midi controller's or as they are called "Master keyboards" do a fine job of controlling everything viá midi - also program change ect...

I agree that they won't control Reason's filters ect... but that is just as easy controlled via your sequence software - no matter if you choose to use the sequencer in Reason or Cubase/Logic.

To Slidingtrancer:

I would say the Roland A - 33

The link is:

http://www.roland.co.uk/prodcat/DETAIL.asp?ID=A-33

There's a picture there too.

Then go to this link to go to your country's (the Netherlands I presume) Roland site and select the link to local dealers:

http://www.roland.be/inhoud-N.html

and then press the button at the top bar: Dealers...

Then you will see a list of shops in Holland (all cities) with addresses and telephonenumbers.

Have fun.

I bought myself a midi-keyboard today :-)) The Roland PC-180A Midi Controller which I hope will suit my Cubase,Reason based musicexploration. Its a nice one,got pitch and modulation wheel (its not a wheel but I dont know what its called). Its a straight forward midi-controller and the delay rate for midi is 2 ms which is acceptable for my SB Live! Platinum card. Now I want monitors and next year, a fucking crazy synth.....like my friends.he bought a Supernova yesterday :-))

Hahaha, and also I got a free ticket to a seminar arranged by Steinberg guys where they will lecture about Cubase VST and Nuendo. Its at the Radisson SAS in Bergen. :-)

Take care everyone!

Please do inform me on Nuendo when you've been there, my email is just above this message .. :D

Thank you...

I think there are a few keyboards that really attract my attention... The roland is just one of them. I read some online info on computermusic.com and I must say I'm kinda puzzled. The way they write about it, it would be wiser to just save about 750$ and buy a good synth? Any opinions on that people?

I just noticed something on Ebay, someone's putting a 19 inch Oberheim Matrix for sale... if I only had the money goddamnit

I have just got hold of one of the true powerful new synths: The Korg MS2000R..

You should really check out this machine..... It is awsome.....both for full on music and also for remarkable sounds for ambient..

Go to korg's websit and click on the MS2000R link (pictures rolling over the screen).

The Korg Triton remains my favourite though, but now I have around 250/300$

and I will need around 1000$ at least ( when I want to buy it second-hand)

Well 650 £ is not that much....it's about half the price of some other synths.. Like Nord Lead ect...

I must point out that the Triton Rack is a very complicated machine.... It is not at all intended for psy/goa but if you know your way around machines it can produce interesting sounds.... I also use it for real accustic sounds in my ambient music..

The sample section is amazing...It can read AKAI discs and CD-rom's (if you have a scsi drive attached) and has room for a lot of memory (250 ram) .... The inboard effects are very professional and I reccomend the sampler unit as much as I would reccomend a AKAI sampler...

Ive been looking at buying a MIDI controller keyboard as well and came across a keyboard that is better suited to trance than any of the Roland models.

Its the Evolution MK-249 C, it connects via USB and has 12 ( yes 12 ) completely assignable controllers including 10 knobs. Perfect for tweaking all those software parameters. Its only 185 American dollars and I am buying one soon. Yaa.

Hope this helps.

Your welcome Sliding..........

I know 650 £ is a lot for a student :-(

Just pointing out that it is quite low priced compared to other synths...

Anyway you need a seperate scsi card and disk for the Triton Rack.... you can not use your PC. The triton Rack do not come with all there features (only 16 mb ram and no Moss engine)... You need to add it and the price will at least be twice the price of the sales price to be able to have a full upgraded machine..... very expensive but worth it :-)

185 dollars, now we are talking, I saw that evolution mk249 C as well and emailed the dutch dealer about it. He said it's supposed to arrive in November. Between you and me, this is bullshit dealers always tell. I think I should expect it around december and I feel the money burn in my pockets....

Anyone seen an even better midi-keyboard, 12 assignable controllers is nice :D
