To the Mac boys (re: soundcards)

Hey macusers,

I wanna know what the deal is with soundcards for the mac. I've never looked into them because the ones shipped with macs have always done me by.

But now I am getting a little better, have a bigger studio and want to sample the DVD player, I have a need for a soundcard (i think).

Firstly, besides having an A/V input into your mac, what other advantages can you get from a 3rd party soundcard?

Secondly, what card is the best value for money?

Thirdly, whats the best soundcard available?

And last, what do you own/ or would you own if you had the bucks? and whY?

Thanks, i know there are a few questions there.

Elysium, I would like some answers from you if poss, as you seem to have used the mac your whole studio life.

didge.

Before I can help you out I need to know what kind of studio setup you are going to use.

Is it all going to be inside the computer or are you also going to use hardware ect?

There are so many soundcards available for different needs... so you really must specify what your needs are..... also in what price range you want the card to be in.

Hey Didge...I'm pretty sure u r running a virtual studio, like soft synths plug ins etc.....so u basically don't need a card with lots of ins/outs. As always I recommend MOTU gear. Their stuff runs so well with mac.....

Check out Midiman's M-Audio Delta series. They're PC, Mac, and Linux compatible. With OS X.1 on a G4, they can get down to 1 ms latency! The prices are reasonable as well. Their cheapest card is the Audiophile 24/96, which has basically the same specs as the Delta, but its 2in/2out, should be right in your boat. You may also want to look at the delta DiO series, they have no DACs, so if you have any outboard DACs already you may get better sound quality with that since its isolated from the interference inside the computer.

Hey all, thanks for responces, about the studio I am building,

Okay, I want Cubase running about 6 VSTi's and about 15 VSTfx's, I want to be able to sample from my DVD player and video games systems in stereo, I also want my Korg MS2000 to be controlled by Cubase as well as in the future an Access Virus and/or a Nord Lead.

And the last thing, I will be running Absynth and Rebirth in the background.

So, my studio will be mostly virtual, but I still need some ins/outs for some hardware gear, and am still tossing up wether to buy a mixer or not (since there are some quite powerful ones within Cubase itself)

Any suggestions would be great. About the price, i have no clue what they even start at, so I guess maybe starting at $500US???
