Wow.. such a general question.. umm..

A few suggestions.. a Waldord Q for leads.. a Waldorf Microwave XT fot leads and pads and sfx, a SH-101, MC-202 for bass and acid sounds/leads, an Emu sampler for samples real instruments (unless played live then just record to PC HD)...

Fock.. this is music without bounds.. use anything you want.. sample yourself taking a @!#$, whatever, it will sound cool if you pass if through enough effects,,

Yeah! dont ever buy roland Groove stuff! dont get tricked by them! they suck! buy a real synthezizer! Check out vintagesynth.com they have a search engine to find the synthezizer you need! they allso have reviews on allmost every synth that exists!

Ya know, I have gotten tons of positive emails and comments on a few of my tracks on mp3.com that where made entirely with...cough cough.... an MC-307. Then again I also never use the factory presets on it either (ok, I used a couple once). The real problem with the Grooveboxes I think is that thier initial ease of use makes them very conducive to making you not think and really learn what they are capable of. Most people never get past the lame presets. That and there is always the issue of gear snobbery with all musicians. The sound quality difference is somewhat noticable when you use them together with other more expensive synths, but it is nothing an BBE Sonic Maximizer won't fix in the turn of a knob. I say get whatever piece of gear you feel comfortable with at first and then REALLY learn how to use it (Actually I recommend two pieces of gear so you can get thrown into the wonderful world of midi right away too). The fact is that no one piece can do all, or even most, of what you want it to do and if you become serious you'll eventually start getting more stuff anyways, regardless of what you get at first. Listen to everyone's suggestions and then pick what interests you the most.

I think the thing to do is buy ONE synth and learn it completely and build the rest around it.

I have the MS2000, it is a beautiful sounding synth, BUT, for a beginner, I think its not so good... quite complex, but not too hard once you practice, but the bad thing is you can only have 2 parts playing at once, which, mixed with no other hardware sux... it is good to mix the two with vstsynths and the likes, but I would suggest checking out the access virus or nord lead, even tho they are used so commonly, they are such a cheap way of having a shitload of hardware parts (both synth and drums) similtaneously
