Guest Eshanti Brahman
Whats the difference between monitors and speakers ......I mean eh they do the same job. For music making, why can't we just use the stereospeakers (from the stereo) or multimedia-speakers a la Creative and Altec. Why monitors a la Genelec,Mackie ,Bluepod etc??? Pls explain this for me :-) Thanks
Guest Mike Indidginus
It's all to do with the price of grain in Honduras and the marmoset's ability to mimic a lampshade. Hope that helps. Seriously though, my understanding is that they all fall under the broad category of loudspeakers, and the differences between them lie in the frequency response. For instance I use a pair of Tannoy speakers/monitors/whatever you want to call them as I find they provide much clearer sound (less muddy bass for one) than a pair of other non-brand speakers that a friend lent me. This makes the production process a little easier as you can imagine. Having said that, it is still good I think to listen to your music on lesser quality speakers too for comparitive purposes. I often do a mixdown of what I've been working on and play it back on my not-so-good car stereo speakers. It's amazing how different it can sound! And if you can get it to sound good on not-so-good car stereo speakers, then I think you're in with a fighting chance of having it sound good on a big system... If I'm talking s**t, please feel free to haul me across the coals

Guest vasyachkin
monitors are supposed to have accurate reproduction, reference reproduction. so that you know that how it sounds is how it is. for regular speakers on the other hand the criteria can be different, to sound good (not necessarily accurate) or to look good or to be loud or to be cheap or whatever but with monitors it should all be about accuracy but it is the same device as any other speaker, just made with different philosophy
