how much is done from scratch??

i wonder how much of your tracks you all are making is done from scratch??

do you do your own baseloop or just "buy" (get) premade samples. and if you make your own do you make the bass from scratch as well (like in soundforge)

and your synth strings, are you using preset settings on the synth or tweaking them all out by yourself. And lastly, how do you get these nice synth psy-sounds?? : )

thanks for reading ///Cal

Hopefully all tracks are made from scratch ....pretty much everything should be. All sounds come just going through your gear and working out which sounds to use. Those sounds are usually not presets but have been tweeked to work into the trax u r making. Although some use presets most don't. You get those "nice synth psy-sounds" by tweeking presets, adding effects ( which really personalises your sound) and by having a nice synth to get them from and of course lots of time. That's what I try to do!

i personally preffer to have my own sounds in each song, every single sound in my tracks is made by me from scratch. It is a good idea to start from presets and then change the sound as u like it. And the short blips, liks, scifi-weird sounds should certainly be made from scratch, as they are unique in each song. I also make bassdrums in SoundForge. = originality

  • 3 weeks later...

well, completely from scratch??

no one makes that.... some does,

but then they use a sample from somewhere else.

that's not from scratch.

whatever style it is,,, people use sample cd's, and stuff from their synths.

no one makes 100% from scratch.

if someone does,

then i guess you are a genius.

but then again, if you use the settings again?

then the next track is not from scratch.?????

I produce a lot of synth and bass sounds from Reaktor, by lining up oscilators with filters, effects and such. I hardly every use a preset to generate a synth sound although I like to use samples for percussion, some of it recorded myself and some off of sample CD's.

Even if you do use presets its a good idea to analyse them and see why they produce the effects they produce. That way you can listen to music and get an idea of how the sounds were generated.

I wish I could get my hands on a hardware modular synth...
