GENELEC Studio monitors

Hi!

Oki,need some good advice here :-)

I am trying to set up a small homestudio and realise the need for some good

monitors. I have been studiying the biggest names like Genelec,Tannoy,Event,JBL,Alesis,Yamaha,Behringer,HHB,Mackie and also the Minipod.

First of all, the Minipod looks extremely cool. My friend bought it a week ago and

they looked quite fancy in his setup. But at the same time, I got an impression of cheap plastic speakers. The sound? Well, sounded good enough for my ears but they are passive speakers, so I have to get an amp as well.(Drawback)

I haven't heard the Genelec speakers, but they are supposedly top notch. So I have set my eyes on the 1029A (I'll buy the sub later). Is it a smart move to buy such compakt monitors? As I said, I am doing my music in my room and have small setup and no need for huge volumes. Two things to think of is cash and purpose. Does anyone have some knowledge/advice/experience concerning these speakers?

And oh yes, do you guys recognize the Minipod to be seriously used in studios or is it just the looks that favors them?

Your help is appreciated and if the 1029A suits my wallet and purpose, I'll buy them next week.!

www.recording.org they have a nice forum, you have to register (easy) but people there are professional recording engineers.

passive speakers do not only require an amp but are consided by many to be inherently inferior to active ones. this is true to some extent. if all else is equal an active speaker will sound better, of course that doesn't mean that active speakers are always better because all else is not always equal :)

by the way since i lied to you last time i have read another opinion on what constitutes monitors. this dude was saying that monitors do not have to be accurate ? but just have to be sort of lucky so that magically your mixes come out fine - go figure :))) i would shoot for accuracy myself though

another thing i read about monitors recently. is that no mix should ever be monitored on just one pair of speakers, you should listen to your mix on many speakers ... easier said than done :)))
