Bio's and press-kits, what to send ?

Im sending out a demo album to various labels, some want a bio of myself and others want presskits if available.

1stly whats a press kit ?

2ndly i printed out a bio (biography) short info about myself and some pics, of myself playing guitar at a party etc... and djing....

nothing major BUT, a lawyer friend of mine helped me write a small legal disclaimer protecting me, incase someone uses my music and some samples i used without permission etc..... is this a good or a bad idea.

the legal disclaimer sounds cool and does protect me. Should I include that when I send out my demos ???

Not saying my music is the best, cause its not, its just my music, its what i created, will labels or people out there take this the wrong way ?

If they are asking for a press kit there should be no problem with a legal disclaimer. A legal disclaimer (in my eyes) just means you are serious and have covered your tracks.

A press kit is a collection of any magazine or newspaper articles you have been in.

Record labels will want to know how famous you are and how many people know you, so they can get an idea of how many people have heard of you.

In your press kit include any party fliers and / or media (web pages, newspapers, magazines, tv interviews)you are mentioned on. Some pictures of you playing in front of an audience doesn't hurt either.

They just want to know how well your record will sell, and figure that if more people know of you through different medias, you will sell more albums for them.

Good luck

Djinn, could you make a sort of generic disclaimer from the one you've got? That would probably help out a lot of us :)

I mean... If you're not busy :)

To djinn:

It is always a good idea to protect yourself. You do not need to send the discalimer with the tracks just write on the CD-R that "all tracks are copyright protected".

By the way I am sure that you have a national music copyright organisation that can do all this work for you. I am a bit amazed that your lawyer did not tell you about it....maybe he like your money too much?

You should check it out..it's normally free of charge and you will be copyrighted worldwide instantly and get money if your music is used in most medias like TV, radio ect.

It is always good to present the labels with some sort of press kit containing reviews of your music (if you got any), pictures of you and life apperances, biography, discography, flyers ect.

But if the label truely like your music it's not really nessesary and I must say that I ahve never heard about this request before in our scene.... it's normally something that the more established music industy make use of...but it can never hurt you make a press kit. Goofd luck.

To Andreas:

You do not need a legal disclaimer...all you need to do is to become a member (free) of KODA in Denmark then all your legal rights are taken care of...Everey time you register a new track it's copyrighted worldwide. You will automatically become a member of NCB too (Nordic Copyright Bureau).

email me if you need to know more.

elysium my lawyer is my buddy and he did it for free !

and Australian copyright laws are different to everywhere else. My friend knows what he is doing, he works for a big time Company in Australia.

I checked with copyright Australia, and im covered fine. Plus I got all the files to prove I made it, so anyone stupid enough to claim it as their own is going to have a hard time proving it, as well as i can.

anyhoot

a simple copyright symbol on the cover or cd, is protection enough because, ignorance of the law is not acceptable anywhere in the world.

Also I will post up the Legal disclaimer, soon
