I know about the producing contest on this site and i think its a great idea , the problem is that not all the people here are producers (counting me) but there is a lot of djs here (counting me) , why not a mix contest too?? The djs in the psy scene are underrated, I know that the producers are very importants but what about the djs? a dj could be very creative too.

good psy dj's are few and far between, it would be interesting to hear some other dj's mix. I've heard even the best suck mixs and freight train beats.

Maybe keep the m9ixes short, like a lentgh requirement, 30, 45 min, etc. and then judge on a few different factors, like track selection and mixing.

this is a good idea psymijis.

Maybe something like interested dj's could do a second cd for the Psychadelic Sparks comp, but a mixed one?? Hmm, just and idea. And they could use the tracks that didn't get onto the first cd??

LISTEN GOOD:

I think the contest should pick 9-10 winners. The winning tracks will make up the First CD, and the Second CD should be mixed by a pro-artist (maybe someone who visits the forum, like Elysium Project or Tegma)

i dont think there will be 50 mixes to hear ,thats too much , maybe the copyright is a problem , but as a dj i dont want to stay underground behind the "artists" , the djs are artists too.

So the people (the djs) who are intterested please contact me and maybe we can do this thing, anyway the administrators of this site have the last word , so let them decide.

sorry the artists are much more important than the DJ's. Without musicians there would be nothing for the DJ's to play.

I agree turntableism can be an artform but not in Trance. One of the few dance scenes that respects the artists and not some guy that plays their stuff.

Why not put some of your mixes on a web site for people to download ? Do we really need a competition to see who mixes the best sets ?

I don't think copyright will be too much of a problem, if the bit rates are kept down. We'll have to keep bit rates down anyway so that we don't dominate too much space - although perhaps participating DJs have to come up with their own server space?

Either way I think this is a cool idea, of course. But only because I love to mix and I love to hear feedback on my mixes. I agree that anything less than 60 minutes is pretty useless - you can't go on a journey in less than 60 minutes. Perhaps we can limit it to a number of tracks - 10 or 12 is a decent number, although of course I'd prefer a lot more, but time would be an issue.

If you psynews.org people don't want to take this on I'd be willing to adjudicate it. There should be seperate marks for technical abilitity [mixing accuracy, mixing length, eq use] and artistic interpretations [track selection, energy flow, journey flow].

I'd hope a lot of people would learn a lot from a competition like this. There are too many amateur DJs in the psy scene who are just so close to being real professionals, but it seems they don't know how to take that step.

its funny how everyone who said no are not djs ,they dont understand , they think djs only play music.

As i said this thread is intended for admins and djs who are intterested in the contest , we dont need people with negatives vibes on this thread.

This ain't Hip-Hop!!! The best DJ's are the ones that keep the music flowing and take you on a journey. Beat mixing psy-trance and nothing else would be boring(imo). Scratch backs and rewinds may work, but then is it what we need in the psy-trance scene? Most of the best DJ's I've seen don't even beatmix, except in a few circumstances.......Yes have a competition, but choose the criteria carefully.

If anything i would love to hear some other psy dj's mix it up. If not a contest maybe even a mix database to link up. Keep the bittrate low, or even just link it to the dj's own server.

This dj odea idea could go places, i'm all about promoting the psy DJ.

unbeatmatched mixing?? if thats what you like, but a bad flow from track to track is disrupting, a real trance dance is aquired from a steady hypnotic tempo, hence beatmixing is what i like to hear.

A great stomping DJ set is unequivalent.

Hmmm...Well, here it seems we have two issues.

First, a fundamental disagreement between people who like beatmixing and those that don't (I personally dislike beatmixing because it often makes music monotonous).

But, more importantly: DJs versus listeners. I understand that if you're a DJ you probably realize intricacies of a set that others don't, but, remember, DJs don't exist in a vacuum. What is important for a DJ is what the audience thinks, not what other DJs in the same room think. Otherwise, DJs wouldn't play to audiences, they would mix at home exclusively for eachother. This doesn't reflect directly on the contest, which I think is a good idea as long as the participants are willing to run it themselves and not try to force Mars or Children to do it. However, to say that people who don't DJ "don't understand", and that this is somehow a "negative vibe", is pretty silly considering a DJ's entire role is to play music FOR non-DJs.

i was just saying its not really such a good idea. To many problems and without long sets your not going to be able to tell much about the DJ. I'd be more interest about what a DJ will put in their set and how they build it up or where they try and take you with it.

Psymijis,

your attitude that only DJ's would understand etc is typical of lots of DJ's because they got their own heads up their asses. I'm a fan of music and collect alot of it but i don't feel the need to go proving myself to anyone. As a DJ your going to have to listen to other peoples opinions even if you want to or not !
