Guest Mike D
I have always wondered what is the legal way of doing this? Like Astral used Dune movie samples on the Dancing Galxy album and stuff, or if I used samples from an African cd I got? Anyone know about this thing?? Mike Spike D! Guest etherdesign
Well I'm sure they got permission for that, but if you are making a track for fun, or for the contest, you can use any sample you like.. as long as you aren't making loads of money off of the track I don't see why any agency would go after you.. mind you I'm no expert in the field.. seems to me though permission is pretty easy to get, judging from the amount of samples in psy from major motion pictures, and I doubt they are paying any royalties by the small percentage of the market that psy is and the small amount of money the artists actually make from the album.. If you're worried, contact the label of the CD; if not, just use it.. as long as you're not just putting a beat to the unmodified track I think you'll be ok. Guest Inu
No one gets permission to use movie samples. Ever. At least not in psy. If Ridley Scott and James Cameron became Goa-freaks, that might change, but for now, that's the way it is (and it's a good thing, too - I have about 100meg of movie sounds and voices in my hard drive)
ouroboros
im pretty sure it depends on how long the sample is. under 5 seconds or something like that you dont need permission over that you do. but i may be off on the time limmit...hell i may be completely wrong altogether. i made an industrial song with a sample from the tv show quincy...the samples over a miniute long. =) im sure thats not legal. but it was so good i had to use the whole thing.. Guest Elysium Project
99% of all samples in psy/trance music are not copyright cleared. I do not know one band in this scene that actually ask for permission to use samples. If you use a sample of a CD you must (in the theory) ask for permission to use it! Do as I do (most of the time) tweek the samples so they do not sound eactly like the original.....this way your back is free!
Guest ClaustroPhobiC
Uhmm... Elysium? That wont work, since the sample is still copyrighted by the original artist/recorder. You just modified it....
Guest Reece
the only artist ive ever heard of clearing a sample was semsis. on the sleeve of their album u can find the acknowledgement. im pretty sure also that if the sample has been cleared, u must acknowledge it in the credits... Strumpling
I was thinking about making my OWN samples..... ;-) you know, something in the sense of: track 1 "when are we leaving?" track 2 "ok we're on the way!" track 3 "are we THERE yet?!" track 4 "our destination is RIGHT around the corner!" track 5 "we've MADE it!" track 6 "what a fanTAStic trip!" feel free to jack my ideas; i can never tell if they suck or if they "kick ass" -=- Matt/Strumpling -=- suck ass?
