Roland MC-303

Hey people!

Has anyone used an MC-303 to make their trance tunes? I want to invest in a piece of hardware and this is about as high as my income will let me go for a hobby piece... What do you think of it as an instrument?

Also - is it possible to do MIDI dumps with it so you can clear the song banks onto a PC for backup?

Cheers!

I'm sure people have used it, most people that I know who have one just use it for a sequencer now though.. it sounds pretty crappy.. yeah you can do MIDI dumps.. instead of getting an MC-303, a similar and much much better sounding machine in the new Roland SH-32 which is not much more at about $500 US..

allow me to speak bluntly.. the mc-303 "synth" is actually the worst piece of crap ever made.. it surprises me that roland still are in business after releasing that poor excuse of an instrument.. in other words.. stay away from it.

If you choose a groove box, go for the mc 505...

...i don't really care you some call it a toy. i won one and i use it wisely to create most of my trance tracks...

check out the mc 505 review at www.sospubs.co.uk

Alot of people call the groove boxes toys and generally rip on them, but very few people ever give good reasons why they don't like them. There are some sound quality issues one could run into. The 303 and the 307's sound quality isn't as high as other synths, so they sometimes sound flat and lifeless when used in conjunction with other gear. I run my 307 (which I use alot) through a BBE Sonic Maximizer which helps make it sound a bit more robust over all. Also 99% of the presets are completely uninspiring, you really need to make your own sounds on these units and you can infact make some geat stuff (I recently found out one of my favorite all time tunes was made entirely on one 303). The main problem with the groove box stuff is that it is designed in a way that came make one very lazy about making music. Pick a present and go, and considering the presents aren't very interesting, it isn't surprising most of the music made on them by most people also isn't very interesting. Like all gear you really need to sit down with it for several months and really learn what it is capable of doing.

My advice is to go a music store and mess around one, as well as other similar gear in the same price range. Then buy whichever you like and then actually sit down and learn to use it. Alot of people I think never learn their gear very well and then run out and buy something else the first time they have trouble doing something they want to do and then forever bad mouth the previous gear. The 303 won't be the main piece of gear you use to get to trance stardom, but it can be a good introduction into making this type of music and what you learn using it can be carried over to more "professional" gear in the future, if you decide to continue.

Jikkenteki...

Cheers for the reply... do you have any links to MP3s of your stuff which you've done on your Mc303 that I could listen to?

I actually use a 307, but the sound engines on them are basically the same from what I have been told. Yes I do have some mp3s up of stuff made with 307.

I have been doing more computer based stuff for awhile now, so the newer stuff on the site is done with a variety of gear and software, but some of the older stuff was all done on a MC-307 (and arranged live I might add). "Liquid Time" has gotten the best overall response and is one of my favorites from that "era". "Thought Pool" is another all 307 track I still like. The two "Desert March" tracks are the 307 for the bulk of the track together with a Korg EA-1 (another budget synth) for some of the main lines. "Deep Meditation", "Thick Wet Stomp" and "Immovable" were also all done on the 307. During that phase I was very into the idea of doing all the arrangements and knob turning/button pushing live, so some of these tracks in hindsite are a bit simplistic perhaps, but it was fun and a great learning experience (I still do some of these tracks live today too).

On my site there is a link to a guy named "Neko" who is also on mp3.com. All his stuff was all done on a 303 and is quite good I think. I particularly like his track "007" and for awhile refused to believe he did it all on a 303.
