Hi, I need some advice on making good patterns in cubase or logic. I would like to know how the fast melodic riffs I hear in alot of goa is made. Do they use step mode in the sequencer or something? How do you people make your riffs?

1/32's?!? Damn, that IS fast :)

I would go for 1/16's I think that is more common, especially in oldschool goa.

Besides, one need to figure out some good scales (there was a gooood thread about that some time ago) - the octave, fifth, small fifth, large seventh, small third (and large third to create some tension), and the small second are a good start :)

Good luck :)

Amygdala of Andreas.. :) ...is fifth like C and G ? ...small fifth C and F# ? ...large seventh C and A# ? And small third C and D# ? And large third C and F? (large third = fourth ??)

...Basically, Voltron... Don't even attempt to play your goa riffs by hand, just program it out. Unless you have an arpeggiator of course, but that's still not really 'playing' it.

I ussually 1/32 too.. Although it sounds like 1/16 when i use it ... Just some fancy triplets in there : ) which i think Tim Mockin meant by half step.

Sorry, I wasn't clear :)

I use 1/32 notes on each 1/16th edge (1/32 note, 1/32 rest). When I said 1/2 step, I meant 1/2 of a step-sequencer step.

And as for fun scales - try Phrygian.
