Sample/Audio ripping/searching programs

A guy once explained to me about a program that could recognise sound parts in any file and take them out and convert them into normal sound files. He used the extreme example of downloading Super Mario 1 (Nintendo) as one non-PC-compatible file from the net and the program still being able to search for the melodies and sounds in it and save them into PC format (.wav, I guess).

I forgot the name of the program...

So does anyone know about this or similar programs? I'd like to sample off computer games, but the sounds are often not in normal format or even as separate files, but rather part of .dat files that code the whole game.

Help, please.

Thanks for the hint, but I have already an MD and I just would like to install a game and play it for 3 weeks to the point where the cool sample comes along, just in order to catch that sample, you see..

Depends what game it is, for all emulation related sound tools, like ripping sounds/songs from Nintendo/SNES/Genesis cartridge ROM images go to zophar.net they have a bunch of tools for doing that.. as for PC games, a general search for fan sites on google and you should be able to find a tool that will let you view and extract the contents in a dat file.. some of them use a proprietary format, some of them can simply be opened using winzip.. what game is it?

Yes, for voice samples and maybe some effects...

I'm thinking of PC games... I'm a bit hesitant to say which one, because there are no better samples anywhere and the game has so many of them... Everyone would like to use them if they knew, I think. But maybe I'm just paranoid? Or maybe I like them unnaturally much....

I could make an album using as the only samples, samples from this game.

But anyway, thanks etherdesign!

Not Alice... hehe...

I found all the sounds from fan websites... I should've had tried that, didn't even occur to me. 16bit/s real audio, but still quite (surprisingly) good.

I have a very simple solution, just sample the damn sound straight audio. Then eq it a certain way, maybe drop the low end, then trim it nicely on both sides, throw it in the track (in tune of course) add maybe a reverb and slight delay...and Boom !!! you'll never be able to tell where you got it from. Damn I'm good.. ;)
