let go the ego-let flow the music

I´m writing this in response to many messages I see here from people telling other people to give up, get new gear, blah blah blah. I´m in this trance thing because of the people I´ve met, places I´ve travelled to, the lifestyle I´ve had that is not bound by corporations, George Bush, oil, rain forest destruction etc. It´s about freedom, realizing we are living creatures in this Universe, a very lucky thing if you take a moment to think about it. The sounds I´ve heard for the last 7 years mean so much, like tapping into the entire universe, especially when we get so much audio and visual garbage thrown at us in the form of advertising. Unfortunatley, there are too many Arsim´s are out there. When somebody asks for advise but only has fruity loops why not tell them all the tricks you´ve learned , share all your knowledge. Sure, suggest other software and hardware but keep in mind not everybody has a rich daddy. I want to hear more music. I don´t want to be told what is trance, what is trance gear and ¨íf you want the right sounds you need to use this and do this...¨. This music is about evolution, and if it doesn´t evolve, then it we might as well all be listening to Britney Spears. The big boys and the want to be big boys say you can only use such and such a computer, this sequencer, that synth...and if you don´t you´re just not getting the ¨right¨ sounds. It´s almost like we´re rock and rollers ... we should only use this type of Fender guitar, tama drums, these kinds of strings...that kind of look, this kind of hands free microphone so we can dance around on stage in our carefully coreographed routine, making sure we stand beside those carefully placed products that our contract says has to be ¨on air¨ for this many seconds. I thought we´d moved beyond that....

Trance isn´t about that, being a freak isn´t about that. Use what gear you have, be collective, let´s use everything we have to make sounds that are Universally understood, not something that is bound by rules, like our governments unlawfully impose upon us while not heading to them theirselves. I want to hear this music evolve, I want to hear new sounds, not the GMSGBUINFECTEDETNICA remix or rewrite. I want evolution. So, give advice, understand that we are a different breed and can keep it that way. Drop the egos... experiment, change, evolve. BOM

exactly what i've been wanting to say.

on top of that, i hear newbies asking if a particular piece of software or hardware is any good, and if they can produce top quality psy with it.

i tell em to any gear is only as good as the person using it.

i mean some pretty damned interesting stuff has been created using just software like reason and floops.

so it's really the musician that counts. epxpensive gear may give you results faster than say a softsynth.

that all folks.

i agree totally... this is too prevalent in our scene now... there is a theory pertaining to this exact phenomenon... and in business it is considered a strategy to keep information learnt in the course of running, private to that company... same kind of stuff happening here in psy trance.. i wish more people would share their knowledge... but then i am not idealistifc enough to get deterred by it,.. we have to learn with or without guides, so i just lump it and am trying to figure it out on my own with occasional help from friends... so lets see what happens, one thing for sure though, if i ever make it, i will help up and coming people.. so that they can spend their time in pushing the boundaries further rather than wasting it groping in the dark trying to learn the rudiments of music making...

I agree too! I'd much rather have some pointers on what to do with the gear i have, than what gear to get next - still if someone asks me how I made this and that sound, I sometimes HAVE to tell them to get for instance a vocoder.

Alotta gear just won't give you the doodads you want, however many knobs you tweak - but then again, and better yet - learn to tweak the ones you have, and create the sounds of your OWN mind... And not everyone elses :)

I agree too. Let producers develope a mind/sound of their own instead of pushing them into a direction other people have done too.

I'm not a psytrance producer atm(hardcore/trancecore music and mainly software user), but I would like to give it a try some day soon.

I think a producer should have to know how synthesis works, then you'll be able to create sounds from scratch which are totally yours. If they have questions we should give them some advice(share our knowledge).. or some examples.. we must not tell them what they should get.. only what the options/possibilities are.

If you don't know how synthesis works.. try, tweak/freak around.. try all knobs/sliders etc untill you find the sounds you want. This can be done with hardware as well as software(even better to start with I think).. it's the creativity that counts ! :-)

Actually, I once thought it would be cool to build a synth, without labels on the sliders - and every now and then, the functions they control would rotate, so you never knew what function you were actually tweakin'... This way, your ears would control the sounds you made, and not the "craftmanship" of knowing your synth - and much more intuitive and expressive sounds would evolve....

Of course, one should be able to disable the shuffling-function, when a sound was made, so one is actually able to use it properly... But is it just me, who find this idea appealing...?

Or did I just smoke to much weed that night - again?!?

Ive always been so greatfull when someone has taken the time out to help me with something (music, art or otherwise), it shouldnt be your studio tricks that define you as an artist but the feeling you put into your work. that is something no person can take from you.

So i agree, share the knowledge, drop the ego's and bad attitudes...bigger, faster, louder, stronger, phatter isn't always better you know... not everyone has to sound like GMS. ive seen masterpiece artworks created with nothing more than a 2B pencil and similarly ive seen great psychadelic trance made with lttle more than a few softsynths.

In the end, its all about those lovely vibrating waves of sound that come out of the speakers, to the listener, the dancer, YOUR AUDIENCE, how they were created is irrelevant.

peace
