Hels
I need help! I'm gonna unload tons of cash on a mini recording setup but I have no idea what to get! Im not gonna unload the cash til that changes of course! So can someone help? Im thinking... one synth to start...maybe waldorf q or virus...gotta test for my tastes... then a pc running cubase or logic (or another?)...once again gotta try em i guess but any ideas on the power/learning curve ratio... maybe i need a sampler as well...could someone explain to me why i cant just use the synth for sounds though? and effects im guessing too... i only wanna use the pc for sequencing and maybe effects i think...any ideas ont hat as well? basically id like to just jump into it...cause i have plenty of ideas for songs...TONS you know? but the thing is all this techie crap slows me down a lot...spend more time learning programs and programming than writing... i should just get an engineer to live at my house! your thoughts? Thanks!

Guest phlux0r
There are a lot of older posts in this forum that discuss exactly your question so just go thru the older messages and you will see what people have said. To sum it up you need: - a decent PC or Mac (depends on your preference) fast CPU lots of RAM and HDD space - a good quality sound card maybe with multiple inputs/outputs and 24bit/96kHz recording - a good sequencer (my preference is Logic Audio - it seems more flexible than Cubase but is also more expensive). - then you need sound sources About your sound sources. People have various opinions on this as you will see so, again, it's up to your own preference whether you like to use hardware synths or you don't mind software synths. You can read ppls disussion about the pro's and con's on HW vs SW in this forum as well so I won't disuss it here. However, you will need enough sound sources to be able to cope with your drums and lead and support sounds so one synth is a bit tight for all that even if it is multitimbral (meaning you can play say 16 sounds at the same time - which also depends on the complexity of the sound patches and the capabilities of your synth). So, you may need a sampler as well for your drums and maybe some other samples and that will free your synth for your leads and other sounds. You could use the instruments that say, Logic provides if you get the Logic ES2 synth, that looks/sounds pretty good and there is a Logic sampler as well that you can use for your sampled sounds and drums or you can buy third party plugins that do drums like Waldorf Attack (they also now have a HW version of that VST - Waldorf Rack Attack) or others that let you load drum samples. Finally the effects... if you are going to rely on using your sequencers and plugin fx then you will have to record all your outboard sounds dry and then apply fx on the recorded audio (unless you get a sound card with near 0 latency and good direct monitoring - then you can run your outbord sounds real time thru your software fx at least in theory . Last but not least: you'll need good monitor speakers to listen to your creations... This is just the tip of the iceberg so, do your research and good luck... Guest kitsune
phlux0r, just noticed your IP. I too am in kiwiland, and have just started writing a bit of music. Interested in speaking further? Folks interested in psytrance here, are scarce indeed.

Guest suarajana
the minimum setup is: the latest version CUBASE (and the manual for it) to be honest--it's not minimum at all.. if you like psytrance, you can be pretty sure most of the stuff you're hearing is made with very little (if any) external hardware
