Guest Psyaholic
hey im a 15 year old guy who would like to make music.I think it would be fun to start in an early age. I need to have some information about; If I should buy or download a program. And what program works the best? I have a net freind who uses FruityLoop or something. He said it was a good program but the main problem about this is that i have a G4 Macintosh and i havent found the program for macs. This net friend would help me with makeing the music but i need to know these things to get on my feet first. All help would be greeted warmly Yours, Espen
Guest bodhisattva
The fact that you have a mac is NO problem , the problem is you are starting the wrong way (my opinion) Do you know ANYthing about music ? Did you ever hear about arpegiators , compressors , delimmiters , quatizing, 3/4, Low frequency oscillators (LFO), filters High pass , low pas etc. ... ? Because i would like to recommend logic audio platinum (you use mac , you install hotline client and you'l find al the soft you need.) version 5 >. Its a hard and long learning curve but its worth the effort because logic can handle wav's and dx/vst plugins as wel as midi. What do you REALLY need?=> - Clear sounding speakers or studio headphones (dont use mum and dad's because it probably sucks bigtime) - A good sounddcard in your mac WITHOUT latency (or as low as possible) and with a middi interface to connect the Midi KB. (powercore , protools, gadgetlabs , lexicon etc. ... ) (between 250$ and ...... $) -A midi keyboard. (about 75 $) -Fingerspitsegefuul This should get you started. Hope this helps. If you rather like to start using reason for example you should just buy it and start it up. Reason is fine but stand-alone its kinda limited .... But then there is rewire .... thats for a later lesson !
Guest Scalar
My advice couldn't be more different! but there is no right or wrong here, just differing opinion so no offense to bodhisattva, just I have my view. Start out as cheaply as you possibly can to find out if you WANT to spend a huge amount of many for all the lovely items listed above! Fruity loops 3 is a GREAT place to start and versatile, although sound quality is poor. but it has big advantages in that you don't need a keyboard and its very user friendly, supports VSTi's and all that stuff, which nowadays you really need. My only advidce to you is find out if this is worth it to you to invest in very expensive, tricky to use equipment before you do! Apart from that, good luck, and I hope to be hearing your tracks soon!

Guest Elysium Project
To Scalar: Fruityloops do not work on a Mac it's a PC software! My suggestion is that you start slowly with one Hardware synth that have plenty of knobs for you to play around with and a sequencer program like Logic ect. You do not need the latest equipment and a whole studio setup to make music and I do think that you need to learn your way around programming sounds and working with a software sequencer before you start to make music. You can of course try out reason and instantly make some music but I want you to know that if you are looking for quality later on there's no way around it..... Reason will not do the job. So again: By a second hand synth with keys and MIDI (do not forget a MIDI connection to your Mac) and a second hand sequencer program and start to play around with it. When you feel comfortable then you can buy more equipment and start to be serious about making full tracks...There's no easy way around making good music. It takes talent and a lot of hard work studying the equipment.
