Guest Marc
Hello to all, Is there a Nordlead user out there who can give use some advise to create those well known "screeming" lead sounds as used by Infected Mushroom for example? The Nord has some great sounds to start with but still it's very difficult to come close to that noise (do you need to use FM, sawtooth, LFO's, filter envellopes). We know a lot of analog synths but the Nord is still a mysterious difficult beast to master. Thanks, Marc Q Factor www.ampcast.com/qfactor
Guest Marc
Sorry it's a Nordlead 2 we are using. Marc
Guest EVP 100% LIVE PA website
with regards to FM DEPTH dial.... square on square gives very pitched and harmonic sweep saw on saw gives a spitting distortion like sweep square on saw gives very pitched and harmonic sweep, but a bit dirtier... It's also to do with the tuning relationship between the 2 operators/OSC if you pitch down the MODULATOR (usually osc 2) then you get a less pitched and more dirty squelch, pitched up gives a more tuned and pitched sound. hope that makes sense, im a bit stoned right now... oh yes and set the mixer to only hear osc 1 (the CARRIER), try modulating the pitch of osc 2 with LFO1 and turning up the FM amount. Best thing to do is to use your ears whilst trying adifferent combinations of waveforms in either osc, whilst only actually hearing the carrier (OSC1).. I use a nord rack 1, creamware DSP based modular system & Logic v5. Soundforge also has a great little 4 Operator FM synth that you can use to hear the different effects created, try it out if you have it. Anyway hope this helps you some, EVP (Alex) my preview clips @: http://www.evp.soundvault.net L8rs
Guest scalar
woah........ Wish I could shed further light on this, but it seems L8rs has FAR greater depth of synthesis understanding than me... like everything worth doing the more you understand, the more you realise you have to understand! Sorry to butt in. I just had to say how impressed i was with the above answer!
Guest Marc
Alex, thanks for your reaction. We have realy problems to create those dirty (or beautifull) sounds with the Nord2 (loads of equipment, to less knowledge). We will try it out. Are there patches available with those screaming leads? Regards and keep the red beast screeming, Marc
Guest blink
wow, evp, you gave tons of precise insights in that last post. i can use those concepts on my soft synths too. thnx from the whole community! blink
Guest Marc
Blink, what kind of softsynt are you using? Marc
Guest Slidingtrancer
Don't overuse the FM, it can cause awful harmonics Setting the filter envelope can also make a sound more dirty filter envelope and decay are the key, make sure the attack is quite slow
Guest Mugge
run the sound through som distortion device... it will do the trick.
Guest reece
yay Mugge! exactly, cram it thru a nice tube/overdrive/distortion unit, or bit crusher, tweak the filter, and you cant help but making a nord sound 'infected'! :-)
