Guest bahamut
I'm still in need of a better soundcard, I was thinking about the m-audio audiophile a while ago but it's too expensive for me atm... (I'm a poor student) Is there a cheaper card with midi&audio, asio support and a reasonable latency?? Surely there is.. how could a soundcard be worse than my sblive! Guest eXpulse
onboard soundcards are the best! and one of those Sound Blaster 16 are really good! )))
Guest Marc
Try a Terratec card, they are super. Look for the cheeper ones with the same specs as the EWS88, only with less channels. www.terratec.com Marc
Guest etherdesign
Eh.. save your cash and get a decent card.. the lower-spec Terratec cards are no better than an sb live.. while you are waiting, check out the unlicensed ASIO drivers for the SB Live, at lease you will get ASIO drivers and low latency.. I don't have a link handy, but there are two driver sets that you will want to look into.. One are the SB Live 'EMU APS' drivers (the EMU APS was a failed EMU card which had much the same configuration of the SB Live onboard (chip wise) only better connectivity.. the other is the 'kX project' drivers, which are totally different, and are WDM/ASIO drivers for the SB Live, and I think you need to have Windows 2000/XP installed to use them though I may be wrong (from what I understand WDM drivers work in Windows 98SE and ME but are not fully supported, and are fully implemented in Windows 2000/XP).. Guest Will
http://kxproject.spb.ru/ From the FAQ The kX driver conforms to the WDM (Windows Driver Model) specification and is therefore compatible with the following Microsoft Windows operating systems: Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 (Second Edition only), and Windows Me. Windows 98 (First Edition) won't be supported. The minimum expected ASIO latency is expected to be 5.33 ms (and possibly as low as 2.66 ms, depending on your hardware/software setup). I would definately check it out. I am using it on a first edition sblive. etherdesign : what is a good soundcard you recommend? for cubase 5, softsynths and vst effects. Guest reece
bahamut, check out Hoontech soundcards. they are quite cheap (at least here in australia,... around $400) with good specs, 24/96, midi i/o, asio drivers, low latency etc. could be what you are looking for. :-)
Guest Marc
.. the lower-spec Terratec???? Where did you get this information? The cards are super (24bit/96kHz). Never driver problems under different operating systems (I worked with XP/W2000/Windows ME and '98). SB cards are still gaming cards (with those nice EAX effects, etc) and not intended to create music. Marc
Guest bahamut
thanks everyone I've read a lot of negative comments about those terratec cards, so I'm not sure if that's what I want. I guess I have to face it... expensive cards are better. And I want a really good card, so I'll just have to wait. btw, I'm already using the kX project drivers, they are great once you know how everything works! The real reason I want another soundcard is because there's too much noise on the line-in AND I'm sick of the occasional audio skips (Yes, I have the notorious older VIA chipsets. I did everything that was supposed to help... installing Windows XP as 'Standard PC', installing the latest VIA 4in1 drivers & the PCI latency patch blablabla...) Guest Marc
Believe me they are top (professional) soundcards. Look for the EWX 24/96 that's a cheap and very good card (same chipset as the EWS88). If you want to make and record quality sounding music, don't buy Soundblaster stuff!!!! A soundcard is one of the most important facts in your homestudio. Guest etherdesign
I meant the lower-spec gaming-type cards that Terratec makes, Marc.. The EWX 24/96 seems like a decent card, however it's the same price as the M-Audio Audiophile, which he can't afford..
Guest Marc
The EWS 24/96 costs about $180 in the Netherlands (180 Euro's). Is that to expensive? Marc
