Graphics Cards

Hello again,

In constructing my own pc, my next question is....

... will forking out for a decent graphics card help performance in any way with music apps? I don't really play many games on computers, and am only going to be using it as a music station.

Also...

has anyone any experience of HyperOS with music apps? Someting tells me that this is a BAD idea, but it seems practical and convenient, if the advert is actually a fair representation of its abilities...

anyhows, cheers in advance.

if you are talking about music making and not music interactive eye candy visuals at high resolution, then you only really need a graphics card to give good 2d redraw. The problem is that some music apps are better used at a much higher resolution than normally used for general computing in order that all the floating boxes/toolbars do not crowd the screen. This can require a more expensive card that will give a good refresh like 85Hz

at high resolutions and good performance in order to be comfortable for long hours of working.

Otherwise, speeds of processor/ram/hard disk/ sound card more of a factor.

Always get a AGP graphic card, no PCI. Other than that... You shouldn't have to worry about anything, just make sure it's not sharing an IRQ with your audiocard. ...and you should be straight.

get a matrox card. these are known for their 2d capabilities and they also have the dual head option wich is a godsend to all us virtual studio owners.

they are a little more expensive than most adapters but are well worth the money.

i agree with mono. i have a ge-force 4 now 9as i love playing video games), but see no improvement on my music making versus my older matrox 32mb 400. all that matters is the 2d redraw. the most bang for your buck my friend.
