I'd like to know what's the favorite OS for all psy producers...Which one works better with cubase SX or Logic??? Whats the most stable??

I'm pissed off with my win 98....

When i try to use Logic 5.02 I have "ASIO Overload"....

When i try to use Cubase SX 1.02 I have Interfaces probs(especially when I load NI Plugins)...

Please God, I have to create my songs!!!!

You can't use Cubase SX with Windows98 - you'll have to upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP. Might as well make it XP since that's the latest.....

I like XP too. I only use SX and it works great. Stable as a rock. I think i've only gotten 2 crashes since i've been using it... and that's because i dont think it likes Absynth yet.

XP requires an activatiion code that you need to get from Microsoft (unless you have a 'different' version that doesn't). I'd go for Win 2000 with Service pack 2. It's quite reliable and stable (for an MS Operating system). XP is still too new and isn't as great as it seems. New/latest isn't always the best. If you upgrade to win2000 from 98, it'll keep most of your settings.

XP and 2000 eliminate sharing of system files. Therefore each prog will install its own personal copy of the system files it will use and was programmed for. This is part of the increased stability not seen in 9x. 2000 and XP are very stable and less likely to fall completely down requiring restart if something goes wrong.

XP and 2000 require faster processors and lots more ram than 9x. like

256mb.

I prefer 2000 because the interface is much cleaner and like 9x. XP has many boxes which pop up and try to assist you. It is possible to setup XP to be very similar to 2000. First look with the LUNA interface of XP, i thought if i cannot disable this crap I will not be able to use it. You may like the new interface however, it is a personal thing, it has more colourful icons and wizards and stuff to assist you. It is definately easier to set up some aspects than 2000. Also easier to leave your networking security wide open. XP comes with various microsoft spy options installed but can be disabled.

XP also is supposed to have worse performance than 2000. As with 2000, some progs that worked with 9x do not work with 2000. Also some progs which worked with 2000 will have to be updated to latest version to work with XP. Some hardware may not work on either, or drivers may have not been released. Some progs which did not work in 2000 may work in XP.

Requires some research :

XP apparently can be activate using a volume licensing key available on the scene instead of an activation code.

It is a big step which with some good research and will be overcome and you will not look back. I personally use 2000 because i prefer a more classic interface. The only problem is that I became very good fixing 98 at work because so many problems occured over the years. 2000 just works so I dont get so much practice.

Regarding Full Lotus's note of upgrading from 98 to 2000. Best performance and stability can be gained with a fresh install. It is good also to clean out all the crap which you are not using and start fresh.

XP or 2000 for sure. Which depends mostly on what soundcard sequencer combo you are using.

Most of the manufacturers seems to devote morre time for XP drivers now, and probably more so in the future.

I use XP with Logic 5.2 and sfp3.1 drivers for my pulsar card, and the improvment over 98 is amazing. I now bring my laptop with a magma box and pulsar and play arrangements live from logic. That would be impossible using the same machine and win98. Try playing a 3d-pinball game while having logic playing......np

The downside......both more difficult to install and configure correctly for audio use....

Interface on XP can and needs to be scaled down on an serious audio machine...

Whatever u choose, re format your drives and install from scratch....

Yes, Full Lotus, you are also correct, upgrade path is good for beginners unless problems result. I really recommend though to get dirty and take your computers apart and put them back together again. It is the only way to learn and you will not forget. Take good backups, always mess with the internals of the computer when it is disconnected from the mains and wear an antistatic wriststrap (no shit). I always bring an extra hard disk when I am reinstalling to copy the data over and do a total format on the other disc. I have had no professional training and have learnt this way with a lot of reading and problems. If you are intelligent and have attention to detail you can build good PCs. There is nothing like the security knowing that you can build the PC again if it fucks up (and you did back up didnt you). But to build an extremely stable PC especially on 2k/xp requires some research on the net regarding software / hardware. It is not beyond the reach of all.
