Guest Snowball Posted September 4, 2002 Share Posted September 4, 2002 Ok...Does any one know a good drum machine to create psy beat? how do I make those incredibly nice sounding drum loops that absolum or gms do_ do I have to use any fx on it such as reverb delay? which fx ( delays, distortions, compressors, rebervs etc) plugins for the PC are good for psy Overall? I just started to make psy but I used to make pretty good house low tempo music but I got really tired of it and since I wet to a 3dvison party where absolum, talamasca and nomad all played I got hooked on psy and I want to make such up tempo full on tracks. I used to do my beats on a TR-909 but they dont seem to work on psy I have a nordlead2, the korg electribes, cubase 5, vegas audio, nuendo, wavelab,sundforge2, absynth, rebirth,reason, TR-909, TB-303, delta 1010 sound card ( just got it) PC p4 1.9 ghz 512 RAM, blueroom minipods Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Elysium Project Posted September 4, 2002 Share Posted September 4, 2002 They use loop from sample CD's and drum sound samples. As far as I know no that many use drums machines anymore. We create our own beats and loops or find loops on CD's ect. You should check out your local pro music gear shop and see if they have some sample CD's with drum loops. Most shop's like that have them or can order them home for you. They will properly also have a brochure with different sample discs. The 909 has one of the best kick drum sounds around; OK it's not exactly like the GMS kick but it's a bloody good place to start! Some cool sound can be created with effects on drums - my alltime favourite, is passing my 707 through a vocoder as modulation-signal, carrying an unfiltered sawtooth... Damn, that's nice! Phased and flanged drums (especially the higher frequencies) works pretty well too. Other than that, messing around with dirfferent parameters is the way, reversing parts of the loop, gating, pitching, that sort'a stuff Good luck, and good sample-hunting! But 4 the loops use sample cd's (just like every one else=BORING), or do some serious processing of a real drummer/drummachine. Guest Elysium Project Posted September 4, 2002 Share Posted September 4, 2002 The 909 Kick and the 909 hats ect. are mostly use as samples these days (except for some talented artists like Andreas and .....Collin?) and as Collin so rightly put it they are bloody good :-)) Yes I agree that pre made loops can be pretty boring but again it's all up to how you manipulate them into your own sound universe. I prefer to experiment and make my own loops these days but once in a while I find some pretty interesting loops and then why not use them? When you are a beginner like Snowball (correct me if I am wrong) then it's cool and make a lot of sense to use pre-made loops and samples to become more familiar with how to express yourself and find your personal style. It's hard enough to learn all the other aspects of music creating so why not make it a bit easier on yourself? Expecting to be able to produce (and write! Whatever happened to 'writing' music?) good music just by buying a particular piece of equipment is like buying an expensive paintbrush and expecting to be able to paint like Vermeer. There's more to music than just technique and technology (hence the current debate on where the soul is in much of todays psy-trance). If the scene is to continue to inspire and progress there needs to be much less of an emphasis on what equipment people are using and more though given to writing original music that touches people and expresses something from within the artist, otherwise you're not an artist but just a technician. I'm sure most people after a while think like you do (I do anyway), but when you start off, and you don't know shit, it helps to know your Virus from your Karma etc. Anyway...you write better music than me so I'll shut up My 2 cents is......get good noises. Your drums will only ever be as good as your noises,which is why anything you do with the fruityloops preset sounds will be shit Sample stuff (loooads of stuff) and then find a good tool to paste em and mess em up with.
