interprogram modulation one program interacting with others

Does anyone know if their are any synthesizers out that can modulate

one program(sound) with other programs or sounds tying them together.

 

Also the same question but with effect boxes being modulated by

sound input not of the sound being effected.

Probably not what you're looking for, but my SH-1's filter can be opened and closed by audio input - somewhat similar to an advanced wah-wah.

 

Anyway - if you want simple unfiltered, single-oscilated sounds to modulate each other, most modern synths can synchronize oscilators, ring-modulate, and frequency modulate - but that's probably to basic for what you need

Hi Bliss,

 

I think what you are looking for is devices featuring an envelope follower.

 

In theory you could, using a modular synthesiser simply modulate the, for example, filter using an audio source directly. In practice you would get a quite harsh modulation making the filter track the actual waveform of the sound rather than the amplitude.

The env follower will convert that waveform on to a contour that can be used to control filter cutoff, amplitude, osc pitch or whatever you can think of....

Of course, if you like to process sounds with eachother a modular synthesizer is the most flexible option, but requires some studying/knowledge. I use the creamware scope platform, which has a excellent sounding modular synth.

Numerous semi-modular synths will also include a env follower.

Otherwise look for the envelop follower on filters (logic's autofilter, stienbergs waldorf filter has it among others).

Vocoders will feature internal envelope followers, and will make drastic changes to the spectral contour of the sound.

Lastly there is the env follower less ringmodulators, fidlly to get right many times, but can give interesting results.
