Soundcard Roundup

Yamaha DS2416 with AX44 I/O expander - 8 i/o (inc. SPDIF) and headphone out.

I know it's not the most recent card on the market but I am SO happy with it; having full dynamics and 4-band parametric on each of 16 channels rocks. Then there's the 2 FX units on board - a definite plus. Things like that really help when you have a relatively slow PC. Ok, so it's not a Pulsar but still... does me fine, thankyou very much.

Thanks for your input. It is interesting that there was such a varied response. Thanks to Colin also for the professionals opinion. Are we going to hear some more unconscious collective - flourostani transcendence, that EP is about worn out here. Still kicks major ass today, wish I had a digital copy. Maybe time for a retro release.

I think we are down to RME/Terratec/M-Audio. Nobody mentioned STAudio though. Their C Port DSP 2000 has good reviews and is priced well but has some build complaints from some users. They have a pro 3000 edition coming out this month. I think STAudio and Terratec have the best solutions for what I am looking for. Midi in/out, line out, spdif in/out and toslink optical in/out both to dat and hopefully good latency for vsti synth/effects and ability to handle many tracks on a PIII 866. But perhaps RME and M-Audio will provide better sound quality. The thing is that most of these manufacturers are selling years old technology but with new software. Yes it is a tried and tested solution and the software is mature but how long before the next edition which will probably kick the ass of the last.

Anyway it looks like around 500 euros at least for a good system. Ouch.
