Guest Ivan
how to explain....imo...percussions with a 2 steps bassline make a nice basic groove
Guest scalar
very simple groove.... take four semiquavers in a row, chop out the second one, make sure the voice playing is a bass one, and a nice clicky kick, sprinkle with off beat high hats and percussive noises and shakes and you should have groove, although one you've heard a million times before. Definition of groove. If you look down and your feet are twitching, there is groove. If they aren't then there isn't. groove is a pattern that still sounds good when played many times over, it encourages you to dance and puts a smile on your face. The most technical definition i could give is... groove is the interaction of different instruments, where a noise from instrument seems to suggest that another instrument should play immeadiately afterwards. that is the best i can do for now. and its just my opinion. I am sure there are MANY different opinions on precisely what groove is!

shpongled
There is also that kind of groove you can't program (or you can but it's not that easy to make it to sound natural)...... it happens when you play for example a keyboard.. the notes don't hit exactly on the beats but some milliseconds before/after.... it makes the track to "breath". If you put snare some milliseconds before the kick drum it sounds like the song is "rushing"... and if you put them after then the sound is "lazy". Then if you put them in turns first two snares before and then two snares after it sounds like it's breathing......... but I guess it's not that easy to make it sound good and it might work better for slow BPM tracks. Guest Andreas of Amygdala
Wow - cool suggestion Sphongled... I'll try that! When I have to make the track swing (not by delay'ing the offbeats...), I accent the last 1/16 before one or two of the beats per bar - usually with a tom or similar vocoded through a saw-tooth wave... That's my groove-thaaang
Guest wogglicity
i personally love triplets for everything but the kick simply that sick twisted ass sound, in the end thouggh what you going to hear on some big thumpin speakers, kick+hi hats+snare, the rest is just the icing on the cake, just make a nice little hi hat arrangement, and really i'd have to say listen to things outside, listen to how they interact, listen to how things just sound good together...i love making rhythms : ) it's simply all about how they interact and just do so much : )...u really gotta look inside yerself tho ;D find out what *u* feel, everyone's got a groove, some are different than others, if yours is different than others, work on that proggress *that* weirdo groove sound = )...fuck it if it doesn't sound like the latest disposable minimal psy track's drums, you make your own! when you walk around watch movements..etc...etc... : ) groove is the hardest thing to come by
