Guest snusnu
OK, I've been doing some serious thinking on what I REALLY want to do in my life and found I basically only had 3 real passions: cars, sex and music!! So after some more thinking, I came to the conclusion that a career in music should be the most accessible option... I do not know ANYTHING about making music (except for 2 years of piano lessons when I was a kid...) and I'm asking you... where should I start??? What were your first steps in music making? Guest Dr. Downer
Snusnu... Sorry man, but of the three careers you mentioned I think music is probably the LEAST accessible, especially since you haven't had any musical experience for what, 20 years? Working with cars would be more financially rewarding and quite frankly, I think working in the sex industry would probably be more consisently fun. But if you're still convinced that's what you should do, and if you want to get the most out of music, then go back to piano lessons. Get yourself a bunch of software; maybe start off with Reason, Fruity Loops or Acid. Get a cheap acoustic guitar and learn to play it - start off by playing along with your favourite (non-dance) tracks. Do you want to be a technician or a musician? You will never become a musician just by learning software and making bleepy noises. If you want to create lasting art then you need to have an understanding of how music works; rhythm and harmony; scales and keys; timbre and dynamics. Maybe you have this already, but for the 99.999999999% of the population who aren't Mozart-level talented this comes from years of study and practise. I tell you now, the odds are stacked against you from the start, and infinitely more so given that you 'do not know ANYTHING about making music'. But then, this is just my opinion. Guest Elysium Project
Just to add a aspect to Dr. Downer's good post. I have made music for the last 20 years or so and it is just the last 7 years that I actually went somewhere with it (released music). The fact is still though that I am not yet able to "live" by my music even after 20 years. Before that I played in different bands (with no luck on the recording area except for one record deal that never happened in the end) and made my own music and studied piano (Conservatory and different schools). So what I am saying is that the music business is a very very hard world and apart for the fact that you need tallent and a basic understanding for music you also need to be lucky and in the right place at the right time. I wish you all the best of luck and tell you to go for it if you really burn for it. But just keep in mind that you properly will have to use the next 10 years or more before you will get to make enough money so you "maybe" can live of it. Keep in mind that noone really "make a living" in our scene and that once they get older they will need to have something else to do since 99% of the bands and artists will be forgotten. Guest DeeperNETWERK
Very good posts, indeed. Making it as a musician is very very hard in the real world, but the demand for technical producers and engineers for big name company's is rising like crazy. I basically decided to write music for fun, it's always been like that, i dont expect money. When i release something I ussually just give it away. But, anyway, i decided to go for more of the industry behind music including studio work, movies, commercials, and sound design. I know my chancs are very slim to actually make a living off the music that I create. If anything, i'd take some schooling, if your really interested, and use their job placement. Make a name for yourself and work your way up to the top.
Guest snusnu
yeah well, I was mostly thinking of a career in DJing, but since the market's so crowded I wanted to make a few tracks of my own to get organizers to know me better... ah well, I guess I'm off for some years of learning. After all, it's fun to fool around with equipment!! SMI²LE
Guest Drav
yeeeah...go for it, but do it for fun, not money. Deepernetwork, thats what im after, a job as a sound designer, hopefully for some computer games company. That sounds fun enough/well paid enough for me to live on Good posts from everyone, slightly depressing outlook (can't make a living from trance) but everyone i speak to tells me that. Fuck it
Guest nick
jesus..... then you really need to work on your chat up lines! get a cpu shit loads of cracked music software (not me) and fiddle through the night, every night until you can say - 'yeah........., i really think that my kick drum actually sounds better than logic bomb's' then you've made it. seriously - a music techhie can be a lonely job, so try and get people around you that are in to doing music aswell - bounce ideas off eachother, exchange production tips and general reiteration of various letters and numbers that no one else will understand. this will help to further your progress and enthusiasm for music production. why do thibk i write so much spiel on this fuckin forum ay!
