Guest KimmZ
It's been a while since I've visited this forum, and I'm disappointed that it hasn't become more active. So, here's my contribution: I've been in your situation and here's what I did. I started out w/Reason 1.0 and it was a good introduction into music production (mediocre sound quality, "dumbed down" studio environment, etc). I made a bunch of tracks and was pretty happy with what I was making, but compared to what I heard on good tracks, it all sounded like shit. You will never get a Skazi/Logic Bomb/Hallucinogen/Entheogenic sound from Reason...EVER. I eventually went into deep training and learned as much as I could about MIDI, sampling, synths, mixers, effects, sequencing, etc. It was a lot of work and really frustrating at first, but if you're serious about music production, over time it will open a completely new sonic world to you. Keep in mind, however, that professional-grade equipment is EXPENSIVE, and unless you have money to burn, you might be better off just having fun w/ Reason. If you're willing to take the plunge, here's what every basic "psy studio" should have: 1. PC/Mac with a "Better than Soundblaster" soundcard (M-Audio Audiophile 24/96, Echo cards) running a good sequencing program (I use Cubase VST). 2. Virtual Analog Synth(s) (Access Virus, Waldorf, Nord's). Every psytrance track has one of these in it and they're responsible for the REAL kicks/powerful basslines/enlightening pads/super-tweaky sounds. 3. Sample-Based Synth(s) (Roland jv's or xv's). These are for more standard sounds in a track, or if you want realistic-sounding instruments like flutes, ethnic instruments, pianos, etc. 4. Midi Controller 5. Midi Interface 6. Mixer (Behringer makes good/inexpensive ones) 7. Software Sampler (Native Instruments Battery or Kontakt) 8. Decent Monitors 9. Good effects unit(s) (TC Electronics M-One, Fireworx if you're rich!) Getting all that will cost a small fortune (and there's a ton of stuff I could add to the list), but not everything listed above is critical. Get a bunch of the stuff off Ebay... there's always good gear being auctioned off by reputable people (they're not all reputable, though!). You can probably sell it off at a fair price later if the gear is good too. Once you have a decent setup, completely immerse youreself into every little detail...experiment, stretch the limits of your equipment, learn everything you can. Over time, you'll be able to do nearly anything you hear on any good track. Then, from what I understand, it's pretty straight-forward from there: bust out 12 tracks, sign-on to major distribution, and then get fucked over by your record label! Guest DJ Raiden
I just like using FruityLoops, altering synths and combining different samples. I've created 2 awesome Goa tracks, thanks to the frikkin' compressor, and major production time. I have the demo, so it would be difficult to make the samples I used. Well, only a few have been created. =P
