Hels
What do you guys do for compression and EQing? Also, do you usually do parts (bass, perc, leads, fx, whatever...) seperately? Or altogether? Or both?
Guest anti
I feel that if have a big enough mix bring as much as you can seperately, because you can eq everything each part. The maib things to eq are the kick, hats, bass, lead, stereo mix from computer, then as much else as you can fit on the mixer. any problems like this you can find out about it on the net. Guest kits / faxanadu
I EQ and Compress as needed, if i think a part needs it i'll go for it... sometimes i compress master mixes as well, but if i do i also try to do other mastering things like eq and reverb. My thinking is that while I'm not mastering proffesionally, i'm still getting better versions my tracks to spread around and play at parties. Anyways, I could always render again and I usually also keep a "clean" mix as well www.angelfire.com/droid/kd-ip
Guest Lars/Mindfly
I'm a sucker a eq'ing...never gonna learn that shit....but it really do help, eq'ing each part (says "the sucker")....used to eq only the whole track, but you have no real control on the mix, doing it this way...reducing the low frequencies (as you wont to remove some of the kick), will most of the time, affect the bass aswell (unless the bass is in the high freq. area...)...a good advice is, if you're not quite sure on, how to eq, then get a hold of someone who's got it right....most unexperienced "eq'ers" (like myself), will fuck the mix up, rather than get it right... =) a little advice is to find a cd or simply a track, you're real familiar with, and use it as a reference track. Listen to it on the speakers you're eq'ing on, and then try eq you're own track, not getting the exact same sound (as it would be almost impossible), but just to give you some hints, on whether you got to much boost on the low freq's and so on.... =) Good luck, mate. cheers, Lars www.mindfly.dk
Guest Nuxx
Both i guess.... Most of Drum Parts, bass, and leading Synths need specificic COMP EQ.... after that you just have to add some more warmth ...compressing the whole damm job.... But i'm a knucklehead anyway... Hasta! Guest spiralix
I use to run kick bass and other percussion thru one compressor.. (stereo) That way you get a clearer sound (if you set it right, not to much of everything.. maybe a ratio of 1:3-4 attack at maybe 20ms)... But it can take alot of twideling to make the kick and bass to get along... The Eq'ing is always important.. try to separate the sounds a bit.. not to much tho, they still have to blend with eachother.. Just see to that the bas doenst drown the kick and vice versa.. hope this helps a bit..
