I had the exact same problem, but figured out what to do... :)

Here's a little guide, but it's done in logic 4.7 for mac, so there may be small "anormally"...

Open an environment window. On the lefthand side of the window, there is the parameters section, where initially OMS objects is selected. Select "Audio" in the rolldown menu under the editing tool box (arrow, pencil, eraser...) - this gives you the audio window (duuh :) )

You should have some standard audio channels here, for regular harddisk-recording stuff, some insert channels, and the Master1 already. If you open the menu "new", you can select "audio-object" (in my logic it's at the bottom of the menu...). Do this, and a little icon appears somewhere in the environment-window.

When you double-click this icon, it turns into a thingy that looks like the other components, except that it has no buttons in it, and just says "off". Now, you should look at the parameter section again (after selecting the new thingy by clicking on it's name in the window...), and in the "cha" attribute select "instrument" - and then instrument1 say... Woopti-doo, buttons and fader appear! :)

This does it for the environment. Now go to your arrange-window, and create a new track. Here, choose audio/audio instrument/ - and there you go. Now you can assign plugins to this track, just as if they were effects - go to the track-mixer and do this :)

Hope this helps, it took me 7 hours to figure it out :-o

Hehe, and don't forget that in LA5.5 you can use the VSTi's multi outs as well. You just assign the Multi version of the instrument to your logic instrument, then create some more instruments making them AUX1 AUX2 etc (you can switch them from mono to stereo if you want to assign a multi stereo out). That allows you for instance to use only one Battery but route samples to multiple outputs where you can apply different FX etc...
