Guest Greg Farley
How do you make the psytrance kick drum (basketball) You know where it's got a definite mid/hi in there but it's still a kick drum?? I.E. Absolum, Alien Project, GMS....
Guest soliptic
if you're synthesising the kick, make sure u use pitch envelope (start high, maybe +6 or so at the start, trailing down to maybe -6 by the very end, or whatever). or, if you're using a sample which is a plain single "note" of a kick, add pitch envelope within your sampler instead. this gives it the distinctive upper attack part trailing into deep sub kick that we know and love. and then just compress + overdrive the kick even more to make it even fatter, this - overdrive especially - will also serve to accentuate the high freq content (since overdrive adds upper harmonics, aka "bite"). Guest Kamy
Hey Soliptic, I've tried it using a clean sample of a 909 kick in EXS24 in Logic and tweaked the pitch envelope on LFO1. I could get close to that basketball. Then I put some fat eq on it, attenuating the higher mid, then compressed with a 1:2 ratio. I could get close but not to the point. Please comment Thanks Kamy
Guest soliptic
hmm well the only things i can think of basd on my own techniques are- 1- blood overdrive - if its a drum channel, it has blood overdrive on it, not even turn up, just sat there. simple. this is a free vst so if you're on osx...sorry! 2- 909 sample... personally i'm not a big fan of the 909 kick, i tend to choose a nicer starting point... have gathered a rather large range of samples over my time, they're all shared on soulseek if u want them but thats just me... i mean... i have no idea how alien project make their kicks... and i have no idea whether my kicks are anything like alien project (probably not)

Guest fbro
I recommend Kick XP for synthesizing kicks. It's for buzz (www.buzzmachines.com), though, and I don't think it can be used thru the buzz generator loader (or what's its name) in FruityLoops... 909 is great too.
