genelec monitors?

My question is if somebody have tried out the Genelec Monitors:

1030am

1031am

1032am

and maybe could give me some feedback of what they thought of mixing techno/psy/trance in these ones. Maybe if somebody could tell me the difference between them?

I've used 1029am, 1030am, 1032am, 1037BM and genelec subwoofers.

The 1029s are very good for small control monitors, but I wouldn't mix or master on them.

I thought that the 1030 were disappointing and too expensive for their quality and power. I compared them with KRK V8s, FAR, Hafler TR8, Dynaudio BM6A and Yamaha MSP10 and I really didn't like the Genelec 1030 in this group. You can get better stuff for that price.

For mixing and mastering I think that Genelec start to be really good from 1032am upwards. They have quite a neutral sound. This however might not please every musician as your music might sound very flat. For sound engineers they are great.

Small Genelec monitors's (1029, 1030, 1031, 1032) bass response doesn't go very low, so you might want a subwoofer too. Bass is quite an important part in trance music. Installing a sub will also make your speaker positioning and settings more complicated. Other monitors might have a better/lower bass response (i.e. Mackies and Dynaudio).

Choosing monitors is very subjective. You should try them in the working space where they will be used in. Ideally you should have many different pairs in your room and switch from one pair to another. After that you should just choose the monitors that you like working with. If you don't like the sound they will become very tiring after many hours of studio work.

In the price range you're looking in (Genelecs are quite expensive) you can't go terribly wrong.

The difference between the models you're interested in is size and power!

all 3 models are active bi-amplified 2 way near-field speakers.

1030 have a 6.5'' bass membrane and 3/4'' high tone. power is 80W for bass and 50W for HT.

1031 have an 8'' bass and a 1'' HT with 120 W for bass and 120W for HT

1032 have a 10'' bass and a 1'' HT with 180W for bass and 120W for HT.

Larger membranes will give you a more detailed and a "larger" frequency response.

If you choose between these 3 models, have a look at Genelec's website where they give detailed information about what pair to buy for certain room dimensions/volume and speaker positions.

Good luck
