Guest akindo
Hello friends. I want to get a computer mainly for music. I was thinking of getting a Machintosh G4 1 GHz laptop, because I hate Windows XP and it's unstability. But I was talking to some people who use PC, and they said that there are more plug-ins and softsynths for PC. What do you think? Which system would you recommend? Thanks! akindo
Guest akindo
Actually, there is a program for Mac so that one can load Windows XP into the Mac OS. So that would mean that I could run PC softsynths on Mac, right? Has anyone tried that? And maybe I could even load up a small PC sequencer to use the plug-ins written for PC? Thanks, akindo
Guest Andreas of Amygdala
It is true, that you can run WinXP on a mac, but you will have to do it in a "virtual PC" - which can't communicate with the mac except for some file-sharing. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to run your PC VST's that way. I use Logic on a powerBook, and couldn't be more pleased. I don't use many softsynths, but I know they are out there. Reason, Reaktor, Absynth, Atmosphere, pro-52(53?), FM-7, Waldorf Attack - they are all for mac as well. I would definetly go for mac, although it's way more expensive. Stability and performance are the obvious advantages, and there are some cool programming languages only for mac - if you know some object oriented programming, check out SuperCollider... It lets you write your own powerfull softsynths Good luck in any case Andreas
Guest soliptic
i keep posting this story and somehow people never believe me... i guess mac/pc preferences are just too ingrained about a year ago me and my housemate both happened to come into a large amount of money to spend on our studios. he had £8K, he chose a mac + stuff. I had £4k, I chose a PC + stuff. Specifically... - a top-of-the-range Dual G4, cd-rw, dvd burner, 80GB hdd (i think), cant remember how much RAM... basically it was just the best he could get at that date, it cost him pretty much all of £4000. - a top-of-the-range PC, bought and configured from a built-specifically-for-music company (which always jacks up the price a LOT): P4-2.4Ghz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, CD-RW, dual monitor support (only bought 1 17" monitor tho). It cost me £1850. Note specifically that his Mac did NOT include an audio interface/soundcard - for this he bought a MOTU for a further £1000ish. My £1850 INCLUDES the cost of my soundcard (delta1010, which is £550 alone). Also I'll tell you he's running logic, I'm running nuendo. Now with over a year of use behind us, how do the two systems face off. Well, we're both recording tracks for the 10-piece band we're both in - ie, giving them a VERY demanding task. Recording multiple channels of high bitrate audio whilst playing back 60+ stereo audio channels plus many VSTis and tons of effects... The last keiretsu track I produced is something like 4GB of audio data... So... its fair to say we hammer them to their limits. Important point in mac vs pc debate, #1: Both systems, ultimately, cope. We've produced tracks (with no discernible difference in complexity), to standards with no discernible difference in overall quality. Mac? PC? Logic? Steinberg? Whatever. They will both work! Important point in mac vs pc debate, #2: Both systems have fought us along the way. My PC crashes. His Mac crashes. My PC maxes its CPU. His Mac maxes his CPU. My PC goes off on weird trips where it seems to do random crazy shit without explanation - his does the same. So in terms of stability , its a draw. People who says Macs are magically stable and dont crash - well - my housemate would like to swap Mac. Because in our experience, its simply not true. Also bear in mind he is using 100% legit software and I'm using a messy mixture of legit and , ahem, not-so-legit... so if anything my PC has more 'excuse' to misbehave, yet they misbehave pretty much equally. and btw - about the stability of XP - whoever said its unstable is talking rubbish. its easily the most stable MS consumer OS yet. I'm no MS fan, win9x was shit, but I've been impressed with XP. The only crashes I ever have are the same crashes I used to get in 9x (I recognise them, always triggered by the same fairly small list of bugs in my software, when I do certain things). But, whereas in 9x this would kill my whole computer 30% of the time... in XP it never does. XP always survives and lets me kill the crashed app, and then continues to run perfectly. In fact, I can usually load it straight back up again and continue, whereas on 9x even if a sequencer crash didnt actually crash the OS, I'd always need to reboot anyway, or it would tend to crash continually well...... thats my (rather long and rambling - sorry! stoned!) story anyway... and the moral is - doesnt really matter, as they're both even in all practical regards, except price, where a Mac is roughly twice as expensive. PS- about software- the comment probably referred to pirate software. There's tons of (music) software available for mac, but it is a lot harder to find cracked versions if thats what you want to do

Guest AgalactiA
Apple is not hype, apple bought Logic ......
Guest dNET
and that makes apple good? I think not... I work with mac os9 and osx everyday , and have experienced way more crashes and stablity/functionallity than my home xp systems. Overrated, not unstoppable, sluggish, overpriced computer OS. Thats it.
