Get a decent host and start experimenting... Vst will work just perfect, there are lots of free ones, just search google and you will find lots of hit´s for freewares and commercial ones... there are many good free ones, like synth 1 and superwave P8, Crystal, Ninja, Vb1, just to name a few..

some good commercial ones, Albino, Fm7, Hydra, Absynth, Atmosphere, might be a synth you would like, very pricey but very good for what i heard... and if you need a drumsampler id recommend DR-008 it´s top notch... simpel and effective!

Look at hosts as cubase, sonar.. if you wanna have lots of tools and lots to learn, for the more "all in one" then there is frutiyloops, Reason(no vst) and muzys, tracktion, ohh help there is so many more.... try demos and you will se what fits you best..

you can always combine different hosts and audio editors... there is lots of ways, you just have to find your! mac or pc, a matter of taste, just get your self a good soundcard, a hardware synth or a midi controler.. and get some free drum and precussion sampels.. just do a search and you will find, and there is always sampling Cd´s to buy. Start from there =) if u need help there is always internet, i promise if you search you will find knowledge out there, you just have to read and experiment....

what i would prioritize, a soundcard, a midisynth or hardware synth with good midi options and some knobs...

look at synths at, www.vintagesynth.com

First learn about how to set up a studio. I swear by www.tweakheadz.com for a great tutorial (in words you can understand) for the beginner-to-intermediate electronic musician. From the knowledge you learn at that site, you can either go hardware (buying actual mixing boards, synths, FX, etc.) or software (programs like Reason, Cubase, FruityLopps, etc) or a mix of both (recommended).

From that point on, you're trying to learn as much as possible about more subtle sound techniques (mastering, balancing, mixing, etc) and integrate that knowledge with cool ideas (playing with LFO's, creative use of sampling, etc.) Best bet is simply to do a search for what you want to learn about specifically and just start clicking on links and doing research.

I'd also suggest after you get over the basics to learn about various types of synthesis (FM, Subtractive, Granular, Wavetable, Additive etc.) in order to really get creative. And sample everything around you! You can get great ambient samples anywhere you go. Footsteps in a stairwell can sound creepy, background conversations can be disorienting (also traffic noise), subway screeches, broken glass, plucking rubber bands, etc.

Be crazy!!
