Has some one experienced music making with a sequencer connected to a computer other than Mac OS X or Windows such as:

- Linux

- FreeBSD

- etc...?

I suppose I wouldn't perform live with a Windows OS, I would be scared about the system crashing in the middle of a live performance.

Thanks,

hey man Linux would be reliable than windows in terms of system being up for quite long time. Atleast, Linux servers stay up consecutively for 2- 3 years. So maybe in your live set you can perform on Linux except for the thing that you got to be Linux friendly.

i am not sure, but i don't think that you will find a really , really good audio software like logic, reason, cubase for Linux.

Linux is not for everyone, and i don't think it's a good operating system for musicians.

Graphic Guys & Musicians -> Mac

Gamers -> Windows

Rest -> try Linux!!! If you are a little bit interested, you will be happy with it.

Yes, I agree, I use Linux and I'm happy with it, however in the beginning it was a little hard to get used to. Here's a program that may be helpful for people who wanna make music with Linux: http://www.jazzware.com

Deedrah (Transwave, Dado) uses Mac - I had a look at his web site.

BTW, when I used Windows, although I could, I never used the sound edition programs, I only used Cubase's MIDI sequencer, which is excellent. I used to control filters and LFOs recording the wheel movements as MIDI signals.

If you are a professional musician, you should invest money in a Mac, because several sound editing programms are only supported under Mac, and you have stable OS and Hardware.

If you are doing this just for fun and not earning money with it, you should stay at your Intel PC or you are a rich man, then go and buy a Mac :)

I'm glad you actually mentioned FreeBSD. Yes, if possible, go for BSD. Linux is really just a hobbyist's playground; don't go there for serious work!

However, due to the dearth of applications on BSD and Linux, I agree with the folks here and recommend you go with a Mac, definitely!

Keep in mind that the Mac OS X core is directly based on BSD, so it is rock solid. You cannot go wrong with a Mac.
