Just want to hear some feed back from people in the know please...

I am running reason and am in the process of getting cubase sx,

so I have been looking around at alot of info,

I have decided I would like either a midi keyboard or a midi synth.

Could someone please explain which one would be the better option, the pros and cons so to speak.

Also, would it be just as easy to do it all on reason and not bother with a external midi device?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Weird question. Midi keyb is for playing sound devices via midi, midi synth is for generating sounds that you play from it via midi. What do you need, keyboard or synth? Or synth with keyboard? Oh well, you need keyboard anyway if you are going to get qbase, so...

What's "it"?

you need a midi keyboard/controller, midi synth? all synth have midi functions so its obvious what a synth is!a midi keybiard us just a controller keyboard like to control the virtual devices the ones on reason or virtual ones in cubase. i think or recomend that if you have too much doubts or need to learn more, stick with reason for a couple of months cubase is more professional. im not saying ur not but its better to mster a software well than hardly use various (i tell it from personal experience) good luck man.

Sorry for my lack of definitions of " it "

I was quite tired when I wrote that, nevertheless...

Perhaps I should of asked if making tunes would be easier using the software only?

Spaceman your quite right, I am not a professional, although nor am I a complete novice ( almost...).

I am just curious to know if a midi keyboard would aid me in my development.

(midi synths - what was I thinking?)

thanks

Mmmmmmmm well a midi keyboard is just a an ecternal control forsoftware synths so at the end of the day the developement is up to you., and yes you can make music with software synths a harware synth is not 100% necessary, i recommend you to learn about anaog synthesis and continue working with soft synths and yes get a midi keyboard chekc some on the midiman site., i hope you get clear the idea of what a midi controller/keyboard can do to you, again its justa a controller, a synth I.E .NORDLEAD or VIRUS. with the midi keyboard you can play thhe notes live instead of programming them in the piano roll (both ways are neeeded) well i you still have doubts heres my msn e-mail psylencex@hotmail.com dont worry about asking, i went through the same frustrating situation so i know what is like. good luck

hey cheers for that dude,

you'll probably be hearing from me.

"I already understood the distinction between the controller and the synth,

I just wasn't too sure which one would be the wiser chioce.'

Thanks again.

Hey Sam.

In my opinion, I would get a decent Synth with Midi capabilities. That way you can use it as a controller for your software, or use it as a live synth and record Audio using it's own sound bank. May as well hit two birds with one stone.

well this is my set up, I use reason 2.5,for me since i know how to use it real well for my main song writing sequencer. Then I usually finish it useing cubase sx 2.01 where I can add pads and add depth. I dont use any of the effects,EQ's, in reason cause I am useing Waves Diamond package in cubase. As far as hardware synths i have a Waldorf Q+ and a Novation KS-4

I dont use any refills for reason I make all my samples, synth, bass, drum etc..from the wally and the ks.Even though i have fm7,b4,pro53,reactor they sound cool but I really dont use them. I use my KS-4 as a midi controller cause the knobs corrospond the the LFO'S OCCIL'S,FREEQ'S, AND ITS ALSO ONLY 49 KEYS SO IT FITS THE STUDIO TOP REAL NICE.
